With spring on the horizon, there are a number of things you’ll need to do to get your RV ready after spending months in storage. Even if you used your RV through the winter, now’s the perfect time to get it ready for the warmer weather. One important aspect that you won’t want to overlook is your RV’s roof. If your motorhome has a rubber roof, it should be cleaned and checked for leaks at least twice a year, more if you plan to go on any long road trips. Leaks can cause a big problem if left unchecked, so you should look for potential damage both inside and out. Areas that can be prone to leaks include anywhere there is something mounted to the roof and along seams.

Using EternaBond sealant tape is an easy way to repair or prevent leaks on your RV roof, as well as other areas. EternaBond uses MicroSealant adhesive that has a lifespan of 18-35 years once applied. Applying EternaBond is a straightforward process that nearly anyone can do. First, the surface needs to be cleaned and clear of any dirt or debris, which can affect the bonding process. Products such as EternaClean and EternaPrime are designed to prep the surface before the tape is applied. If you use some other type of cleaner, make sure it’s not made with the types of solvents that can damage the rubber material on the roof.

After the surface is clean and dry, you are ready to apply the tape. Take care to keep the tape straight and avoid air bubbles as you lay it down, as the adhesive material won’t allow you to easily lift the tape up and re-apply. Remove the protective layer on the adhesive side as the tape is laid down, to avoid having it stick to itself or anything else. There should be at least 1” of tape on each side of the seam or tear you are repairing. The tape can be cut to fit around corners and roof features. Be careful when cutting the tape due to its thickness and the strength of the adhesive. After laying down the tape, apply pressure to it to make sure the adhesive fully bonds to the surface. This can be done with your hand, but EternaBond does sell a metal roller that can make this step easier.

In most cases, EternaBond RoofSeal will take care of your RV’s rubber roof. There are special cases where other EternaBond products may be helpful. If there is a gap in a seam, for example, it can be filled in with EternaBond’s DoubleStick tape, which can act like a putty tape. Then RoofSeal can be applied over it. AlumiBond tape has an aluminum backing, making it ideal for fixing leaks in pipes or repairing other metallic surfaces.
