CURT Mfg Part #23523 Universal Coupler Lock CURT 23523 Trailer Coupler Lock -- Secure Your Coupler on the Lot, at the Campsite, or in Storage

Your trailer is one of your biggest investments. The CURT 23523 coupler lock drops into the coupler socket and physically blocks the latch mechanism, preventing a thief from simply slipping your trailer onto any ball hitch and driving away. It also serves as a visible deterrent -- a bright lock in the coupler tells would-be thieves to move on. Weighing just 0.5 lbs and compact enough to toss in a tow vehicle glove box, this is an easy add-on that pays for itself the first time you leave your rig unattended.

Block the Coupler, Block the Theft

The CURT 23523 is designed to fit the three most common trailer ball sizes used in North America -- 1-7/8 inch, 2 inch, and 2-5/16 inch. That covers the vast majority of travel trailers, fifth-wheel tag trailers, boat trailers, cargo trailers, and utility trailers on the road today. One lock, one part number, broad coverage.

Installation takes seconds: open the coupler latch, insert the lock body into the coupler socket, and engage the keyed cylinder. The lock body expands or is shaped to fill the socket and prevent the coupler from closing down onto a hitch ball. No tools required, no permanent modifications to the trailer.

Triple-Size Coverage

One lock fits 1-7/8", 2", and 2-5/16" ball couplers -- the three most common RV and trailer hitch ball diameters in the US market.

Hardened Steel Body

Constructed from hardened steel resistant to cutting, prying, and hammering. Resists basic hand-tool attacks that defeat cheaper zinc or aluminum locks.

Keyed Cylinder Included

Comes with a keyed lock cylinder and keys. No separate padlock needed -- everything required to secure the coupler is in the box.

No-Tool Install

Inserts directly into the open coupler socket in seconds. No drilling, no wiring, no modifications. Remove just as fast when you are ready to hitch up.

Where the CURT 23523 Fits in the Lineup

CURT offers several coupler security products. The 23523 sits in their universal coupler lock category -- a single device engineered to span the three dominant ball sizes rather than requiring size-specific purchases. If you tow multiple trailers with different coupler sizes, or if you want one lock that works across the family fleet, this is the right choice. CURT's more specialized couplers locks (such as their dedicated 2-5/16" only models) offer a tighter fit for a single size but require a separate purchase for each coupler diameter.

Visible Deterrent: The bright steel lock body sitting in the coupler socket is immediately visible to anyone walking past. Most trailer theft is opportunistic -- a lock that is easy to see is often enough to make thieves pass your rig by.

Common Applications

  • Travel trailers with A-frame couplers (1-7/8" or 2" ball most common)
  • Fifth-wheel tag trailers and gooseneck-converted trailers using conventional ball couplers
  • Boat trailers (1-7/8" and 2" ball very common on lighter boats)
  • Cargo and utility trailers stored on-site or at storage yards
  • Horse and livestock trailers using 2-5/16" heavy-duty couplers
  • Campers and pop-up trailers left at seasonal or long-term storage
Storage and Campsite Use: The CURT 23523 is equally useful at a campsite while you are day-hiking or off exploring. It takes about 10 seconds to lock the coupler before you walk away from the trailer, and it prevents both theft and accidental hitch engagement if another camper or vehicle bumps the tongue.

Installation Notes

To install the CURT 23523:

  • Open or release the coupler latch fully so the socket is open and accessible.
  • Insert the lock body into the coupler socket from above or from the front, depending on coupler style.
  • Turn the key to engage the locking cylinder and secure the lock body in place.
  • Pull the lock to confirm it is seated and will not lift out.
  • Remove by inserting the key, releasing the cylinder, and lifting the lock body free.
Key Management Tip: Keep at least one spare key at home, not in the tow vehicle. If keys are locked in the cab or lost at a campsite, you will need a locksmith or bolt cutters to remove a quality coupler lock. CURT typically ships two keys with this lock.

Important Information -- Please Read Before Purchase
  • This lock is a deterrent device. No mechanical coupler lock is impenetrable with unlimited time and heavy tools. Its primary purpose is to deter opportunistic theft and make your trailer a harder target than an unlocked one nearby.
  • Verify your coupler style before purchase. This lock is designed for conventional round-socket A-frame ball couplers. It may not be compatible with specialty couplers such as Bulldog-style posi-lock couplers, adjustable-ball couplers, or pintle hooks.
  • Do NOT tow with the coupler lock installed. The lock body must be fully removed before hitching to a ball. Towing with the lock in place will damage the coupler, the lock, and the ball.
  • Keep spare keys in a separate, secure location -- not in the tow vehicle. Loss of both keys may require professional locksmith services to remove the lock.
  • Inspect the lock periodically for corrosion, especially if used in coastal or high-humidity environments. Lubricate the key cylinder with a dry graphite lubricant to prevent sticking.
  • This product ships with 2 keys. Additional key duplication depends on the cylinder keyway -- check with a local locksmith for availability.
