Why Brake Controllers Are Necessary When Towing

Sometimes history can cloud judgment in the decision making process and when it comes to brake controllers this is often the case.  Many new RV'ers receiving advice have a father, uncle or other acquaintance who towed a trailer all over the country with an imperfect setup and no trailer brakes with out incident. But times have changed, vehicles are moving faster, trailers are heavier and there is more of everything on the roads today.  Being able to stop quickly is so important and a good quality brake controller is of utmost importance to any trailer setup.   Deciding on a time delay setup or inertia activated proportional brake controller should be done with research and evaluation. Always take into account the size of your tow vehicle and trailer weights staying within the safe tow ratings set by the manufacturer.

When you are towing a trailer behind your vehicle, there are a number of important points that you need to take note of and various precautions you need to take into account. For just one example, you need to ensure that the wires aren’t dangling between both entities, as this can be dangerous.

Not only that, but you need to be sure that your vehicle and the trailer work together as one. The connection between the two needs to be seamless. When this happens, the drivers behind you can know instantly when you are braking or turning. They should also be able to easily see your taillights in the dark.

Every one of those lights is vital to safe and efficient road-tripping, but let’s consider the brake lights in particular. These are some of the most important lights to pay close attention to when you have a vehicle that is pulling a trailer behind it.

In order to properly connect your vehicle and trailer’s brake lights, you will need a brake controller. Without this particular piece of equipment, you will not be able to have the two affixed and this could lead to disastrous effects.

This is why having such a contraption is vital and cannot be foregone. Your braking power is drastically improved for proper safety measures adherence. Fortunately, we have a plethora of available brake controllers for seamless drives with your trailer.

We have options from some of the top brands on the market, such as Tekonsha, Hayes, Curt, and more. When purchasing a brake controller, be sure to consider your vehicle and the trailer in question. The size of both should be thought of, along with the type of trailer and how much you’re traveling with it.

Proportional brake controllers are best for those who travel quite often and pull heavy cargo, such as heavy machinery and livestock. Meanwhile, a time-based brake controller would be best for lighter cargo and less frequent travelers.
