The hitch ball is the connection point between your tow vehicle and trailer coupler. Using the correct ball size and weight rating is not optional—an undersized or worn ball can cause coupler separation while towing. Hitch ball sizes and ratings

• 1-7/8 inch: Light-duty trailers up to 2,000 lbs GTW. Common on small utility trailers.
• 2 inch: Medium-duty up to 3,500-6,000 lbs GTW. Most common size for boat and utility trailers.
• 2-5/16 inch: Heavy-duty from 6,000 to 30,000 lbs GTW. Standard for travel trailers and large cargo trailers.

What to check

• Shank diameter: Common sizes are 3/4 inch, 1 inch, and 1-1/4 inch. Must fit your ball mount hole.
• Shank length: Must be long enough to fully engage your ball mount and allow for a lock washer and nut.
• Finish: Chrome balls resist rust better but may need replacement when they wear through to bare steel.

Ball covers

A rubber or vinyl ball cover keeps grease off your clothes and prevents rust when the ball is not in use. They also signal to other drivers that you are not currently towing.
