Camco 55370 — Vented Lockable Double Side-by-Side Battery Box for Group 24 RV & Marine Batteries

Camco 55370 — Vented Lockable Double Side-by-Side Battery Box for Group 24 RV & Marine Batteries

Holds two Group 24 batteries side-by-side. Vented to expel hazardous gases — meets U.S. Coast Guard CFR 183.420 and ABYC E-10.7 specs. Lockable lid. Positive and negative terminals with 3/8" studs. Compatible with 3/8" ring terminals. Durable polymer construction, black. 17-5/8" × 15-1/2" × 13-7/8" (with vent ports). All hardware included. 1-year warranty.

Why Choose the Camco 55370 Double Battery Box?

The Camco 55370 is a purpose-built double battery box that holds two Group 24 batteries side-by-side in a single enclosure — protecting them from physical damage and keeping them safely contained in an RV storage compartment, truck bed, or marine application. Unlike open battery trays or makeshift mounting solutions, the 55370 fully encloses both batteries, shields the terminals from accidental contact, and provides a lockable lid that prevents unauthorized access or movement in transit.

The vented design is what makes this box suitable for enclosed storage. Lead-acid batteries — including conventional flooded, AGM, and gel types — can off-gas hydrogen during charging, which is explosive in confined spaces. The 55370's ventilation system, including the included hose, hose mount plate, louvered vent grille, and hose clamps, routes those gases safely out of the storage compartment. The box meets both U.S. Coast Guard CFR 183.420 and ABYC E-10.7 marine safety specifications — the same standards required for battery enclosures on boats, which are among the most stringent ventilation requirements for battery storage.

🔋 Holds Two Group 24 Batteries

Side-by-side dual battery storage in one enclosure — fits two Group 24 batteries, the most common RV and marine starting and auxiliary battery size

💨 Coast Guard-Certified Venting

Ventilation system routes battery off-gases safely out of enclosed storage compartments — meets U.S. Coast Guard CFR 183.420 and ABYC E-10.7 marine battery specifications

🔒 Lockable Lid

Lid locks to prevent unauthorized access, accidental opening, and battery movement during travel — keeps batteries securely contained in the enclosure

⚡ Built-In Terminals

Positive and negative terminals with 3/8" studs allow external cable connections through the box — compatible with 3/8" ring terminals on standard battery cables

⚠️ Fits Group 24 Batteries Only — Verify Battery Size Before Ordering

The 55370 is sized for Group 24 batteries. Despite the listing title mentioning Group 27, all confirmed specifications and Camco's own documentation describe this box as holding two Group 24 batteries. Group 27 batteries are physically longer (approximately 12" vs. 10.25" for Group 24) and will not fit in this enclosure.

Group 24 approximate dimensions: 10.25" L × 6.75" W × 8.75" H (dimensions vary slightly by manufacturer)

Not compatible with: Group 27, Group 31, 6V GC-2 golf cart batteries, or lithium batteries that exceed Group 24 dimensions. If you need a box for larger batteries, see Camco's Group 27 or Group 31 battery box options.

Note on lithium batteries: Lithium (LiFePO4) batteries do not off-gas during normal operation and do not require vented enclosures. This box is primarily designed for lead-acid battery types (flooded, AGM, gel). It can physically house lithium batteries of Group 24 dimensions, but the venting hardware is unnecessary for lithium.

⚙️ Why Battery Venting Matters in Enclosed Compartments

Many RV owners store batteries in closed compartments — under a bench seat, in a front storage bay, or inside a tongue box on a trailer. These enclosed spaces can accumulate hydrogen gas off-gassed by lead-acid batteries during charging, particularly at high charge rates or when batteries are overcharged.

The hazard: Hydrogen gas is highly flammable and can ignite from a small spark — including the spark produced when connecting or disconnecting a battery cable. In a confined compartment with no ventilation, even a brief charging session can build up dangerous concentrations.

What the 55370's ventilation system does: The included hose connects to the vent port on the battery box and runs to the outside of the RV or storage compartment. The louvered vent grille covers the exterior end of the hose. As gases accumulate inside the sealed box, they travel through the hose and vent safely to the outside air — keeping the compartment itself free of flammable gas.

U.S. Coast Guard CFR 183.420 and ABYC E-10.7: These are the federal and industry standards for battery compartment ventilation in marine applications — among the most rigorous standards for enclosed battery storage. Meeting these specs means the 55370's ventilation design has been validated against real safety requirements, not just general best practices.

Key Features & Benefits

  • Holds Two Group 24 Batteries Side-by-Side: Single enclosure for dual Group 24 RV or marine batteries — keeps both contained, protected, and connected through the built-in terminals
  • Vented Design — Coast Guard and ABYC Certified: Ventilation system safely routes battery off-gases out of enclosed compartments; meets U.S. Coast Guard CFR 183.420 and ABYC E-10.7 marine battery safety specifications
  • Lockable Lid: Lid secures with a lock (padlock not included) to prevent unauthorized access and keep batteries firmly in place during transport
  • Built-In Positive and Negative Terminals — 3/8" Studs: External battery cable connections route through the box via dedicated terminal studs, keeping cable connections organized and protecting them from exposure
  • Compatible with 3/8" Ring Terminals: Standard ring terminal size used on most RV and marine battery cables — no adapters or special hardware needed
  • Durable Polymer Construction: Heavy-duty polypropylene resists corrosion, impacts, and the acids and fumes typical of battery environments
  • Black Finish: Neutral black color suits most RV storage compartments and battery mounting areas
  • Complete Ventilation Hardware Included: Hose, hose mount plate, louvered vent grille, foam tape, putty tape, and 2 hose clamps — everything needed to set up a fully vented installation
  • Mounting Hardware Included: Mounting hardware for securing the box to the RV floor or compartment surface is included

📋 Installation Overview

Tools Needed: Drill (for vent hose routing hole if needed), screwdriver, wrench for terminal connections

Key Installation Steps:

1. Choose the mounting location — the battery box must be mounted where the vent hose can be routed to the outside of the RV or compartment

2. Secure the box to the floor or compartment surface using the included mounting hardware — prevents the box from shifting during travel

3. Route the vent hose from the box's vent port to the exterior — drill a hole if needed; seal around the hose with the included foam tape and putty tape to prevent moisture intrusion

4. Mount the louvered vent grille on the exterior end of the hose with the hose mount plate and hose clamps

5. Place both batteries in the box side-by-side

6. Connect battery cables through the terminal studs (3/8" ring terminals) — positive and negative terminals route external wiring through the box without exposing connections

7. Close and lock the lid

Vent hose routing: The vent hose should terminate at a location where exhaust gases cannot re-enter the RV interior — not under a door, near a window, or next to an air intake.

If you need to store two batteries in an enclosed RV compartment where gases cannot safely accumulate, the 55370's Coast Guard-certified ventilation system is the key feature to look for. For open or well-ventilated mounting locations, a non-vented strap-style box like the 55374 may be sufficient.
