Camco 30A Male to 50A Female Surge Protection + Circuit Analyzer

Camco 55460 Power Grip 30A-to-50A RV Dogbone Adapter with Surge Protection, 18 In.

One adapter does three jobs -- it steps your 50-amp RV down to a 30-amp pedestal, analyzes the campground circuit for wiring faults, and provides integrated surge protection. The Power Grip handle makes connecting and disconnecting at the pedestal easier, even in tight spaces or wet conditions.

30-to-50 Amp Dogbone with Built-In Protection -- Not Just a Plug Adapter

Most dogbone adapters simply bridge the physical connection between mismatched pedestal and RV cord. The Camco 55460 goes further: it actively checks the campground outlet for common wiring faults before your rig draws power, and it includes surge suppression to protect your RV's 12V and 120V systems from transient voltage spikes that are common at busy campgrounds.

The 18-inch flexible cord gives enough slack to reach the pedestal without straining the plug face, and the Power Grip overmolded handle lets you pull the 30-amp male plug cleanly from the receptacle without grabbing the cord itself -- a common cause of internal wire fatigue over time.

Circuit Fault Indication

LED indicators signal open ground, open neutral, open hot, reversed polarity, and wired correctly conditions before you power up your RV.

Integrated Surge Protection

MOV-based surge suppression absorbs transient voltage spikes at the pedestal, reducing risk of damage to sensitive RV electronics and appliances.

Power Grip Handle

Overmolded grip on the 30-amp male plug allows firm, controlled insertion and removal -- no cord-yanking required at slippery or cramped pedestals.

Compact 18-Inch Cord

18-inch flexible cord provides comfortable working length without the bulk of a full extension cord, keeping the connection tidy at the pedestal.

What the Circuit Analyzer Checks

Before you power your RV, the LED indicator pattern on the 55460 diagnoses the outlet condition. Standard fault codes cover:

  • Correct wiring -- safe to connect
  • Open ground -- missing safety ground at pedestal
  • Open neutral -- broken neutral conductor
  • Open hot -- no line voltage present
  • Reversed polarity (hot/neutral swapped) -- dangerous miswiring at pedestal

If the analyzer signals a fault, do not power up your RV. Report the issue to the campground office before using that pedestal.

Understanding 30A-to-50A Dogbone Adapters

A 50-amp RV service is a 120/240V, two-hot-leg configuration delivering up to 12,000 watts. A 30-amp pedestal provides a single 120V leg at up to 3,750 watts. When you use this dogbone, your 50-amp RV will operate on one leg only -- both legs of your RV panel will share that single 30-amp source. This means you will need to manage your load carefully: avoid running multiple high-draw appliances (AC, microwave, electric water heater) simultaneously. This is a normal and safe way to run an RV when 50-amp service is unavailable, provided you stay within the 30-amp limit.

Load Management Tips at 30-Amp Campgrounds

  • Run only one roof AC unit at a time to avoid tripping the 30-amp breaker.
  • Turn off electric water heater when cooking or running the microwave.
  • Use a propane burner instead of an electric induction cooktop when on 30-amp service.
  • Monitor your pedestal breaker -- repeated trips indicate you are exceeding 30-amp draw.
  • This adapter does not increase available power; it adapts the physical connection only.

Surge Protection -- What It Covers and What It Does Not

The integrated MOV (metal oxide varistor) surge suppression in the 55460 is designed to clamp brief, high-energy transient spikes -- the kind caused by nearby lightning strikes, utility switching, or other campground RVs cycling large loads. It is not a whole-system surge protector with voltage monitoring, auto-disconnect, or display readouts. For full-time or frequent camping, many full-timers use this dogbone in combination with a dedicated inline surge protector (such as the Progressive Industries EMS-PT30C or similar) for complete protection. The 55460's surge protection is a meaningful first line of defense, especially for weekend use.

Important Information -- Read Before Use

  • This adapter is rated for 30 amps and 3,750 watts maximum. Do not exceed this limit. Running high-draw appliances simultaneously on a 30-amp source can trip the campground breaker or damage the adapter.
  • If the circuit analyzer indicates any fault condition (open ground, open neutral, reversed polarity, open hot), do not connect your RV. Notify campground management before using that outlet.
  • This product adapts a 50-amp RV cord to a 30-amp outlet. It does NOT increase available power to 50 amps. Only one 120V leg of your RV's 50-amp system will be active.
  • The integrated surge protection suppresses transient spikes but does not provide voltage monitoring, auto-disconnect on sustained over/under-voltage, or the full protection of a dedicated EMS (Energy Management System) device.
  • Always grasp the Power Grip handle -- never pull by the cord -- when removing the plug from the pedestal receptacle.
  • Inspect the adapter before each use for cracked housing, burned contacts, or damaged cord insulation. Do not use a damaged adapter.
  • For outdoor use at campground pedestals; keep connector ends dry during connection and disconnection. Do not use in standing water.
  • This is a 30A male (TT-30P) to 50A female (14-50R) adapter. Confirm your RV power cord ends in a NEMA 14-50P (50-amp male) plug before purchasing.
