Dometic FreshJet 5 -- 15,000 BTU Low-Profile RV Air Conditioner with Heat Pump
The FJX5557EHPWHCS delivers serious roof-mount climate control in a low-profile 10.5-inch housing -- cooling down to 40 deg F via the built-in electric heat pump, with a pre-installed Multi-Zone FreshJet control board and hard-start capacitor ready to go. A direct upgrade path for Penguin II installations.
The Dometic FreshJet 5 (part number FJX5557EHPWHCS, SKU DOM9620017216) is a 15,000 BTU rooftop RV air conditioner with an integrated electric heat pump. Unlike traditional RV AC units that only cool, the FreshJet 5 can both cool and heat your rig -- the heat pump mode operates effectively down to approximately 40 deg F ambient temperature, making it a genuine four-season comfort solution without adding a second appliance.
At just 10.5 inches tall, it sits in the same low-profile footprint as the Dometic Penguin II, making it the natural replacement choice when your Penguin is ready to retire. The unit ships with the Multi-Zone FreshJet control board pre-installed in the rooftop shroud, so the hardest part of the wiring is already done. A built-in hard-start capacitor helps the compressor start cleanly on shore power or a generator without excessive voltage sag.
Refrigerant is R-32, a lower global-warming-potential alternative to the older R-410A and R-22 used in previous-generation Dometic units. R-32 also has a higher energy-efficiency density, which contributes to the FreshJet 5's improved BTU-per-amp performance compared to the Penguin II it replaces.
Heats and cools from a single rooftop unit. Heat pump mode operates down to approximately 40 deg F ambient.
10.5 inches tall -- same roofline footprint as the Penguin II for a clean drop-in replacement.
Integrated hard-start capacitor reduces compressor startup current draw -- easier on generators and shore power pedestals.
Lower GWP refrigerant with high energy density. Factory-sealed, no field charging required at installation.
The FJX5557EHPWHCS ships with the Multi-Zone FreshJet communication board already installed inside the rooftop unit. This board enables zone-based climate control when paired with compatible Dometic Multi-Zone thermostats and an ADB (Automatic Distribution Box). You do not need to purchase the board separately or install it yourself -- it is ready to connect at time of roof installation.
This unit requires two additional Dometic components to operate. They are sold separately and must be ordered at the same time as the unit:
Installing the FJX5557EHPWHCS without both of these components will result in a non-functional system. Verify you have both before scheduling installation.
The FreshJet 5 is designed to mount in the standard 14 x 14 inch RV roof opening used by the Dometic Penguin and Penguin II series. The low-profile 10.5-inch height maintains the same roofline clearance. However, because the FreshJet 5 uses the Multi-Zone FreshJet control system, the interior ceiling assembly (air distribution box/ceiling assembly) and any existing Penguin-era thermostat wiring will need to be replaced with FreshJet 5-compatible components. This is not a plug-and-play thermostat swap -- plan for a full control-system replacement.
R-32 is a single-component (A2L class) refrigerant with a global warming potential approximately 68% lower than R-410A. It is factory-sealed at the Dometic facility; the unit arrives pre-charged and sealed. No refrigerant handling is required during rooftop installation. If the sealed refrigerant circuit is ever breached (collision damage, catastrophic compressor failure), R-32 service must be performed by a certified HVAC technician with A2L refrigerant handling credentials -- standard R-410A equipment is not rated for R-32.
