A failed door switch is one of the most common reasons an electric RV step refuses to retract or deploy on cue. This Kwikee 379407 new-style plunger door switch (normally open) is the direct OEM-style replacement for worn or broken switches on Kwikee black control modules introduced after February 1999. Swap it in and your step goes back to retracting when the door closes and deploying when it opens -- exactly as intended.
The door switch tells the Kwikee control module what position the entry door is in. When the switch plunger fails -- sticking, corroding, or breaking -- the step logic gets confused. The step may stay deployed while driving, refuse to retract, or stop deploying when the door opens. This normally-open replacement switch restores the correct signal.
This is the new-style switch, which superseded the old-style design and is compatible with all Kwikee black-housing control modules manufactured since February 1999. It is not interchangeable with the older white-module switches.
Direct drop-in for Kwikee black control systems. Matches original mounting footprint and connector configuration.
Switch opens circuit when door is closed (plunger depressed), signaling the control to retract the step -- correct logic for Kwikee systems.
Kit ships with the plunger, mounting plates, and all required hardware. No sourcing extra fasteners.
Confirmed fit with black control modules 909506000, 909507000, and 909508000. Verify your module part number before ordering.
Kwikee step systems use a normally-open switch wired so the circuit is open (no continuity) when the door is closed and the plunger is depressed. This tells the control module to keep the step retracted. When the door swings open and releases the plunger, the circuit closes and the step deploys. Installing a normally-closed switch by mistake will invert the logic and cause the step to behave in reverse.
This new-style switch is correct for Kwikee black control modules, introduced February 1999 and later. Confirmed compatible control part numbers include:
If your Kwikee control module housing is white or gray, you likely need the old-style plunger switch -- not this part. The new-style black-module design changed the plunger geometry and mounting plate configuration. Check your control module color and part number before ordering.
The door switch is typically mounted in the door frame or door jamb so the plunger contacts the door face when closed. Correct positioning is critical: if the plunger is not fully depressed when the door is shut, the step will not retract. Allow a small amount of preload travel so the switch is fully activated at door-closed position.
While the switch is out, clean the plunger bore and contact area with electrical contact cleaner. Corrosion and debris in the plunger channel are a leading cause of premature switch failure. A light film of dielectric grease on the plunger shaft after installation extends service life.
Kwikee electric steps are wired directly to 12V DC. Disconnect the vehicle battery or the step's inline fuse before removing or installing the door switch to avoid accidental step movement or a short circuit during installation.
