Lippert 6,000-lb Axle Includes Bearing Kit Lippert 814211 -- 12" Brake Drum Hub with Bearing Kit, 6 on 5.5" Bolt Pattern

A direct-replacement brake drum hub assembly engineered for 6,000-lb trailer and RV axles. Solid iron construction, a complete bearing kit in the box, and a 6 on 5.5" bolt pattern that covers a wide range of travel trailers, fifth wheels, and utility trailers. Everything you need to restore reliable electric brake function is included -- no separate bearing sourcing required.

The Right Hub for Heavy-Duty Trailer Duty

Brake drum hubs take a beating: heat cycles from braking, road grit, water crossings, and the constant stress of heavy towing loads. Lippert's 814211 is cast from solid iron -- the same material used in OEM trailer axle assemblies -- so it manages heat dissipation and resists cracking far better than lighter alloy alternatives. At 12 inches in diameter, this drum is matched specifically to electric brake systems on 6,000-lb-rated axles, giving your brake shoes the full swept area they need to stop a loaded rig safely.

The 6 on 5.5" (6 x 139.7 mm) bolt pattern is one of the most common heavy trailer configurations, found on a broad range of Forest River, Keystone, Jayco, Coachmen, and comparable brands that use Lippert or Dexter 6K axles. If you're matching the OEM bolt pattern on your trailer's existing wheels, this hub drops right in.

Solid Iron Drum

Full cast-iron construction handles repeated heat cycles and heavy braking loads without warping or surface cracking over time.

Complete Bearing Kit

Inner and outer bearing cones and cups, a double-lip grease seal, and a cotter pin are all included -- no trip to the parts store needed.

Wide Wheel Fitment

Accepts wheels from 14.5" to 16.5" in diameter, covering the most common wheel sizes used on travel trailers and fifth wheels in this weight class.

1/2" Wheel Studs

Standard 1/2" studs match the lug nuts and torque specs already in use on most 6,000-lb trailer axle setups.

What's in the Box

Lippert ships the 814211 as a complete hub-and-bearing assembly. The bearing kit components eliminate the guesswork of sourcing matched cone-and-cup pairs separately. Included items:

  • 12" solid iron brake drum hub
  • Inner bearing cone
  • Inner bearing cup
  • Outer bearing cone
  • Outer bearing cup
  • Double-lip grease seal
  • Cotter pin
Bearing Kit Advantage: Matched inner and outer cone-and-cup sets from a single manufacturer means consistent tolerances and no mixing of incompatible bearing grades. When replacing a hub after a failure or routine maintenance interval, install all new bearings at the same time rather than reusing worn components.

Installation Overview

This hub is a conventional tapered-roller bearing drum assembly. Standard installation procedure applies:

  • Pack the inner bearing cone thoroughly with high-temp wheel bearing grease before seating.
  • Press or tap the inner grease seal flush against the hub bore.
  • Slide the hub onto the spindle, install the outer bearing cone, washer, and spindle nut.
  • Adjust spindle nut to finger-tight plus 1/4-turn (or per your axle manufacturer's torque spec), then back off to align the cotter pin hole and install the cotter pin.
  • Install the dust cap and reconnect the brake wiring harness to the electric brake magnet.
Grease Type: Use an NLGI #2 lithium-complex or synthetic trailer wheel bearing grease rated for high-temperature service. Standard chassis grease is not appropriate for wheel bearings.

When to Replace Your Brake Drum Hub

Drum replacement is warranted when you observe any of the following during inspection:

  • Drum inner diameter worn beyond the maximum diameter stamped on the drum face (typically 0.060" over new diameter for 12" drums)
  • Deep scoring, heat cracks, or hard spots on the braking surface
  • Bearing noise, roughness, or play detected during a wheel shake test
  • Grease seal failure indicated by grease contaminating brake shoes
  • Bearing seizing or overheating after a bearing-pack failure on the road
Maintenance Tip: Repack or inspect wheel bearings every 12,000 miles or once per season, whichever comes first. Trailers that cross water -- whether at a boat ramp or flooding roads -- should have bearings inspected immediately after, since water intrusion past the seal rapidly degrades grease and accelerates corrosion.

Brake System Compatibility

This drum hub is designed for use with electric trailer brake systems. It is NOT compatible with hydraulic surge brake setups that use a different drum profile. Confirm your trailer uses an electric brake controller and electric brake magnets before ordering. The 12" drum size requires a 12" electric brake shoe-and-magnet assembly -- do not attempt to pair this drum with 10" or 10x2.25" brake assemblies.

Complete the Brake Assembly: If you're rebuilding the entire brake corner, pair this hub with matching 12" electric brake shoe-and-magnet kits and a new dust cap. Replacing the brake shoes and magnet at the same time as the drum ensures even wear-in and consistent stopping performance.

Important Information -- Read Before Ordering and Installing
  • This hub is rated for 6,000-lb axles only. Do not install on axles rated above or below this capacity -- undersized drums can overheat and fail under heavy loads.
  • Confirm your trailer's bolt pattern is 6 on 5.5" (6 x 139.7 mm) before ordering. A 6 on 5.5" hub is NOT interchangeable with 6 on 5" or 8-lug hubs.
  • This assembly is designed for electric brake systems only. It is not compatible with hydraulic surge brake drums.
  • Brake shoes and brake magnets are NOT included. Purchase the matching 12" electric brake shoe kit separately.
  • Wheel bearing grease is NOT included. Use an NLGI #2 high-temp wheel bearing grease -- do not substitute chassis grease.
  • Torque wheel studs and spindle nut to your axle manufacturer's specification. Incorrect torque can cause bearing failure or wheel separation.
  • Always install a new cotter pin after adjusting the spindle nut -- never reuse the old pin.
  • After installation, drive approximately 25 miles, then recheck the spindle nut adjustment and inspect for grease seal leaks before loading the trailer to full capacity.
