Installation Overview

Replacement is straightforward for a competent DIYer with basic hand tools. The general process follows standard NuTone motor swap procedure:

  • Turn off the circuit breaker supplying the bathroom fan -- do not rely on the wall switch alone.
  • Remove the fan grille and unplug the motor assembly from its quick-disconnect connector.
  • Slide out the old motor assembly from the housing slots.
  • Slide the 20998K assembly into the same slots and reconnect the wiring harness.
  • Restore power and test airflow before replacing the grille.
Maintenance Tip: While the housing is open, vacuum dust from the duct collar and inspect the duct run for blockages or disconnected sections. Restricted ductwork limits airflow regardless of motor condition and can shorten the replacement motor's service life.
Rotation Direction: This motor is rated for counter-clockwise rotation when viewed from the inlet side. Installing a motor with the wrong rotation direction will move air backward through the housing and drastically reduce effective CFM. Confirm rotation before final reassembly.
