Southwire 40450RVC3 50 Amp 120/240V RV Automatic Transfer Switch with Surge Guard Protection

Southwire 40450RVC3 50 Amp 120/240V RV Automatic Transfer Switch with Surge Guard Protection

50 amp hardwire automatic transfer switch for RV shore power and generator power systems. Provides automatic source switching, generator priority, built-in electrical protection, multi-mode surge suppression, and RVC communication capability for compatible RV monitoring systems.

About the Southwire 40450RVC3 Transfer Switch

The Southwire 40450RVC3 is a 50 amp, 120/240V hardwire automatic transfer switch designed for RVs with both shore power and generator power sources. It automatically transfers power between the RV generator and shore power connection while helping protect the coach from unsafe incoming power conditions.

When generator power is energized, the transfer switch moves to generator mode after a 30-second delay. If both shore and generator power are available, generator power takes priority after the delay. When the generator shuts down, shore power is restored after a short delay.

🔁 Automatic Transfer

Switches between shore power and generator power without manual cord swapping

⚡ 50A 120/240V Rating

Designed for 50 amp RV electrical systems using split-phase 120/240V service

🛡️ Surge Guard Protection

Protects against common unsafe park power and generator power conditions

📡 RVC Communication

Supports RVC-compatible monitoring for voltage, current, and fault conditions

Key Features & Benefits

  • 50 Amp RV Automatic Transfer Switch: Transfers power between shore power and generator power in compatible RV systems
  • 120/240V Split-Phase Rating: Designed for 50A RV electrical systems with L1, L2, neutral, and ground conductors
  • Generator Priority: When both shore and generator power are present, generator power dominates after the transfer delay
  • 30-Second Generator Delay: Transfers to generator power automatically after the generator is energized and the delay period completes
  • 3-Second Shore Return Delay: Returns to shore power shortly after generator power shuts down
  • Total Electrical Protection: Southwire lists protection from faulty park power and unsafe source conditions
  • Surge Protection: Multi-mode surge suppression helps protect RV electrical equipment from surge events
  • Voltage Protection: Protects against low voltage below 102V and high voltage above 132V
  • Wiring Fault Protection: Protects against open ground, open neutral, reverse polarity, and miswired pedestal conditions
  • Frequency Protection: Protects against high and low frequency conditions
  • RVC Compatible: Supports RVC communication for compatible devices to display voltage, current, and fault conditions
  • Shore Power Sensing: Communicates shore and generator power availability through shore power sensing technology

🚐 Common RV Applications

The 40450RVC3 is commonly used in motorhomes, fifth wheels, and other RVs with 50 amp shore power service and an onboard generator. It is useful when replacing a compatible 50A transfer switch or upgrading to a transfer switch with built-in Surge Guard protection and RVC communication capability.

Verify the RV’s existing transfer switch wiring, generator output, shore power service, mounting space, and RVC monitoring compatibility before ordering.

📋 Installation Notes

This transfer switch is hardwired between the RV’s shore power input, onboard generator, and main electrical distribution system. It must be installed with the correct conductor size, torque settings, grounding, neutral routing, strain relief, and enclosure mounting.

RVC communication features require compatible RV monitoring equipment and network wiring.

⚠️ Electrical Safety

Transfer switch installation involves 120/240V AC power, high current wiring, shore power, generator power, neutral/ground bonding considerations, and RV electrical code requirements.

Installation should be performed by a qualified RV technician or electrician familiar with 50 amp RV electrical systems. Disconnect all AC power sources and verify power is off before service.
