RV propane usage guide

If your real-world propane use does not match the estimate, that is normal. Propane usage is driven by weather, drafts, how hard appliances work to recover, and how your RV is set up. Use the sections below to make the estimate fit your situation and to reduce propane use without freezing.

Why the furnace changes everything

The furnace is usually the biggest propane burner in an RV. What matters is run time, not the furnace rating on the sticker. Two rigs with the same furnace can have totally different usage because one has drafts, thin windows, and high air leakage and the other is tighter and better insulated.

  • Wind increases air leakage and makes the furnace cycle more.
  • Thermostat setting matters a lot. Every small increase can raise run time.
  • Nighttime lows are the real driver. Cold nights can cut your days in half.
  • Slides and seals are common draft points.

Water heater: usage is not really hours

Most RV water heaters do not burn steadily for a full hour unless you are taking long showers back to back. They cycle to recover temperature. Real use depends on how hot you set it, incoming water temperature, and how much hot water you draw.

  • If incoming water is cold, recovery takes longer.
  • If you shower longer, the burner cycles more often.
  • If you have an outdoor shower leak or dripping faucet, it can quietly waste propane.

Refrigerator: efficient but sensitive to setup

RV absorption refrigerators usually sip propane, but they can burn more when they are not venting properly or when it is extremely hot outside. If the refrigerator struggles, it can also lead to spoiled food, which is a different kind of pain.

  • Hot ambient temperatures increase burner run time.
  • Poor ventilation behind the fridge makes it work harder.
  • Frequent door openings increase recovery load.

Tank fill level and the 80 percent usable rule

Propane tanks are not filled to 100 percent. They are filled to allow expansion. That is why the calculator assumes 80 percent usable capacity. Real life adds one more variable: many tanks are not actually filled to the same level every time.

  • If you start at 60 percent instead of full, your days will be lower.
  • If your gauge is inaccurate, you might think the calculator is wrong.

Fast ways to reduce propane usage that actually work

  • Block drafts first: seals, vent covers, window coverings, and slide seal checks.
  • Lower furnace run time: use an extra blanket at night, reduce thermostat setpoint, close unused rooms.
  • Cook smart: short stove use is small, but oven baking can add up in some routines.
  • Use electric when available: space heater and electric water heating modes when plugged in.
  • Fix leaks: a bad regulator, cracked pigtail, or loose fitting can waste propane and create a safety issue.
Safety note: If you smell propane, shut off the tank, ventilate, and do not use open flames. Replace worn hoses and check connections.
