What the 4-Pin Flat Standard Covers

The 4-pin flat connector is the most common wiring standard for trailers rated under 3,500 lbs gross trailer weight. It carries four circuits:

  • Ground -- white wire, chassis ground return
  • Left turn / brake -- yellow wire
  • Right turn / brake -- green wire
  • Running / tail lights -- brown wire

This wiring standard does NOT carry a dedicated brake controller output or a 12V auxiliary power circuit. If your trailer requires electric brakes or a charge line, you will need a 5-pin, 6-pin, or 7-pin connector solution instead.

Not for Electric Brake Trailers

The 4-pin flat connector carries no brake controller signal wire. If your trailer has electric brakes, you need a minimum 5-pin connector. Attempting to power trailer brakes through a 4-pin circuit will result in non-functional brakes -- a serious safety issue.

Installation and Storage Tips
  • Apply dielectric grease to both connector ends before plugging in -- it prevents corrosion and keeps contacts clean, especially in wet climates.
  • After connecting, tug gently on the adapter to confirm it is fully seated. A loose 4-flat connector is the most common cause of intermittent trailer light failures.
  • Store the adapter in a small zip-lock bag or hitch accessory pouch to keep contacts clean between uses.
  • Inspect connector pins for bent or corroded contacts before each tow season.
