Camco 09951 Water Heater Element Socket -- 1-1/2", 6-Point, 1/2" Drive, Chrome-Plated Steel
The right tool for removing and replacing screw-in electric water heater elements. The 6-point design grips corroded hex flanges without rounding, and the 1/2" square drive accepts any standard ratchet or breaker bar for the leverage you actually need.
Standard pliers and adjustable wrenches slip on water heater element flanges, especially after years of mineral buildup, sediment, and corrosion. The Camco 09951 is a purpose-built 1-1/2" 6-point socket that seats fully over the element hex and applies torque evenly across all six flats -- not just two contact points like an open-end wrench.
Whether you are draining and flushing a storage-tank water heater, swapping a burned-out element, or upgrading to a higher-wattage element, this socket does the job cleanly. The chrome-plated steel construction holds up to the torque needed to break loose flanges that have not moved in years.
Seats fully on the element hex and distributes torque across all six flats, reducing the risk of rounding a corroded flange.
Works with any standard 1/2" ratchet, breaker bar, or torque wrench -- no special tools or adapters required.
Hardened steel core with chrome plating resists corrosion and provides the strength to break loose stubborn, over-torqued elements.
Sized specifically for the 1-1/2" hex flange used on standard screw-in residential electric water heater elements.
The 09951 is designed for standard screw-in residential electric water heater elements with a 1-1/2" hex flange. This is the most common element style found in 30, 40, 50, and 80-gallon residential tank water heaters from manufacturers including A.O. Smith, Rheem, Bradford White, State, and others.
This socket is sized for residential screw-in electric water heater elements only. It is not designed for use on RV-specific water heaters (Suburban, Atwood/Dometic). RV water heaters that include an electric element use a different element style and thread engagement -- verify element hex size before use. If you are servicing an RV water heater, check your unit's service manual for the correct element socket size.
Swapping a water heater element is a straightforward job when you have the right socket. A few tips that make the process smoother:
The 6-point socket profile is far less likely to slip or round a corroded hex than a 12-point socket or an adjustable wrench. On elements that have been in place for years, this matters -- once you round the hex, removal gets significantly more difficult. The 09951 is the professional approach to a job most homeowners and service techs encounter eventually.
Camco part number 09951 (vendor/alternate reference 72-9284, UPC 014717099516) is a single-piece socket tool. No gasket, no replacement element, and no wrench handle are included. Pair with a standard 1/2" drive ratchet or breaker bar from your existing tool set.
Water heater elements should be inspected every 2-3 years in areas with hard water. Sediment buildup reduces heating efficiency and shortens element life. Flushing the tank annually and checking the anode rod at the same interval extends water heater service life significantly.
