Camco 45197 -- Dome-Shaped RV Skylight Insulator with Adjustable Straps and Sewn Cover
Purpose-built foam insulator shaped to fit the curved dome skylight found in most RV bathrooms and showers. Blocks radiant heat in summer and reduces cold-air infiltration in winter -- all without tools, adhesives, or permanent modification to your rig.
The rectangular dome skylight above most RV bathrooms and showers is a notorious weak point in your rig's thermal envelope. Thin acrylic over an air gap means blazing summer sun heats your bathroom fast, and winter cold radiates straight down through the same opening. The Camco 45197 addresses both problems with a contoured foam insert sized specifically for the 14 x 22 inch dome skylight format common to travel trailers and fifth wheels.
Installation takes minutes. Two adjustable hook-and-loop straps secure the insulator inside the skylight well -- no drilling, no screws, no adhesive. A sewn fabric cover gives the interior a finished look instead of exposed foam. Remove it in spring in the same amount of time it took to put up.
Shaped to match the curved interior of standard RV dome skylights, filling the well completely so there are no gaps around the edges where air can bypass the insulator.
Included fabric sleeve gives the insulator a clean, finished appearance from inside the rig. No bare foam visible from the living space.
Hook-and-loop adjustable straps hold the insulator securely in the skylight well without tools, fasteners, or adhesives. Removal is just as quick.
Deflects solar radiant heat in summer to reduce AC load. Reduces cold-air infiltration and heat loss in fall and winter camping, extending your usable season.
In summer, the foam layer blocks a significant portion of the radiant solar heat that would otherwise pass through the acrylic dome and heat the bathroom interior. In winter, the same foam reduces the rate at which cabin heat escapes upward through the skylight and slows cold-air radiation downward into the room. One inexpensive accessory pays dividends in both heating and cooling seasons.
The 14 x 22 inch rectangular dome skylight is the format used by the majority of RV manufacturers for bathroom and shower installations. If your rig has a dome-style acrylic skylight over the bathroom, measure the interior well before ordering. The insulator is 4-1/2 inches tall, so the skylight well must be at least 4 inches deep to allow the straps to engage properly. Flat (non-dome) skylights require a different Camco insulator model.
No tools are required. Slide the foam insulator up into the skylight well from inside the RV, adjust the two straps to press the insulator snugly against the well walls, and secure. The sewn fabric cover should be in place before installation so it faces the interior of the rig. To remove, loosen the straps and pull the insulator straight down.
If your 14 x 22 dome skylight is the venting type, the insulator must be fully removed before attempting to open the vent. Operating the vent with the insulator in place can damage the vent mechanism. The quick-release strap design makes removal fast, but do not leave the insulator installed when running a vented skylight fan or opening the dome.
