On these smoother surfaces, normal gasket tension alone may not be enough to keep the air conditioner from shifting position over time, which can put stress on the mounting bolts. Adding these foam pads to the unit's basepan, flush with the unit, helps maintain tension on the mounting bolts and reduces lateral movement of the air conditioner, protecting the mounting hardware from shearing under heavy lateral loads.
Despite the "Spring Pad" name, this kit consists of foam pads, not metal coil springs. The name refers to how the pads help maintain spring-like tension on the mounting bolts, not their material composition.
Coleman Mach's own installation instructions recommend this spring pad kit particularly for heat pump installations on fiberglass roofs, or any installation subject to heavy lateral loads, to help retard motion that could otherwise shear the mounting bolts.
