The Norcold 50808 is the OEM replacement cooling unit temperature monitor control for Norcold 2118, 1200, 1201, 1210, and 1211 Series RV refrigerators — the safety control module that monitors the surface temperature of the cooling unit's boiler tube and shuts off all heat sources (gas burner and electric heating elements) automatically if an overtemperature condition is detected. Previously known as Norcold part number 637360, which itself replaced the older 634677 and 634678 controls, this is the same direct-fit replacement under an updated part number.
The temperature monitor control is a critical safety component in Norcold absorption refrigerators. If the cooling unit runs too hot — due to improper leveling, poor ventilation, a failing cooling unit, or other causes — uncontrolled overheating can result in fire. The control detects this condition and cuts power to all heat sources before temperatures reach dangerous levels. When the original control fails, the refrigerator may shut down unexpectedly, fail to heat on one or more energy sources, or in some cases run without proper high-temperature protection.

Norcold absorption refrigerators heat an ammonia solution in a sealed boiler tube using either a propane burner or an AC/DC electric heating element. If this boiler overheats — from poor ventilation, being severely off-level, a partial cooling unit failure, or other causes — the ammonia can reach unsafe temperatures. The temperature monitor control is clamped to the boiler tube. When it detects an overtemperature condition it immediately interrupts power to all heat sources, preventing the situation from escalating. This is the primary reason Norcold issued its recall programs in the early 2000s — and why this control is considered a critical safety component rather than a routine service part.
