Fastway 80-01-2404 Zip Coiled Breakaway Cable — 4 Ft, Cable Only, Universal Split Ring, Stainless Steel

Fastway 80-01-2404 Zip Coiled Breakaway Cable, 4 Ft, Cable Only, Universal Split Ring, Stainless Steel

Previously sold as part number 80-01-2140

Replaces your worn, frayed, or broken breakaway cable with a coiled stainless steel design that stays off the ground and out of the way while towing. Universal split ring fits any style breakaway switch pin. Cable only — pin not included. Recommended for bumper-pull trailers. UV and corrosion-resistant coating.

Why Choose the Fastway 80-01-2404 Zip Breakaway Cable?

A trailer breakaway cable is a legal safety requirement in most states — it's the cable that pulls your trailer's emergency brakes if the trailer ever separates from the tow vehicle. But most factory breakaway cables are straight wire cables that drag on the ground while towing, get kinked, fray from contact with the road surface, and eventually break at exactly the wrong time. The Fastway Zip solves all of those problems at once.

The Zip's coiled design keeps the cable up off the ground at all times while towing — no dragging, no fraying from road contact, no sharp wire ends stabbing your fingers during hookup. The coil maintains just enough tension to follow along cleanly during turns and braking without going slack, while still providing the full 4 feet of extension needed if the trailer ever breaks away. The cable is made from rust-resistant stainless steel and coated to handle UV exposure, rain, and road grime. The universal split ring at the switch end fits any style breakaway switch pin, and the spring clip on the vehicle end attaches to your safety chain loop or other connection point in seconds. The 80-01-2404 is the cable-only version — if your existing switch pin is still in good condition, this is the right replacement.

🌀 Coiled Design Stays Off the Ground

Coil keeps the cable lifted during towing — eliminates dragging, fraying, and road contact that destroy straight factory cables

🔗 Universal Split Ring

Fits any style breakaway switch pin — no guessing about compatibility with your existing switch box

🛡️ Stainless Steel + UV Coating

Rust-resistant stainless cable with UV and corrosion-resistant coating — built to outlast standard factory breakaway cables

⚡ Fast Installation

Clip old cable off the switch pin, thread pin onto the Zip's split ring, clip the spring clip to the tow vehicle — done

⚠️ Cable Only — Switch Pin Not Included

The 80-01-2404 is the cable-only replacement — it does not include a breakaway switch pin. This part is intended for use when your existing switch pin is still in working condition and only the cable needs replacement.

If you also need a new pin, see the following Fastway Zip options that include a pin:
80-01-2204 — 4 Ft Zip Cable with Bargman-style plunger pin (for bumper-pull trailers)
80-01-2160 — 6 Ft Zip Cable with plunger pin (for gooseneck or 5th wheel trailers)

Length selection: The 4 ft cable (this product) is recommended for most bumper-pull trailer applications. The 6 ft cable is recommended for gooseneck or 5th wheel trailers, where a longer reach between the trailer tongue and the tow vehicle's connection point is needed.

ℹ️ How the Trailer Breakaway System Works

A trailer breakaway system is an electric brake safety device required by law in most jurisdictions for trailers equipped with electric brakes. Here's how it works:

Normal towing: The breakaway cable connects from the trailer's breakaway switch to the tow vehicle. The switch pin holds the switch in the "off" position. The cable hangs slack and out of the way — or in the Zip's case, coils neatly off the ground.

If the trailer separates: As the trailer pulls away from the tow vehicle, the cable goes taut and yanks the switch pin out of the breakaway switch. This triggers the switch, which uses the trailer's onboard battery to apply the trailer's electric brakes — bringing the runaway trailer to a controlled stop.

Why cable condition matters: A frayed, kinked, or broken cable can fail to pull the pin cleanly in an emergency — defeating the entire safety system. Regular inspection and prompt replacement of worn cables is essential.

📋 Installation Overview

Replacing Your Breakaway Cable:

1. Disconnect Old Cable: Unclip or cut the old cable from the breakaway switch pin — leave the pin in place in the switch if it's still functional

2. Thread Pin onto Split Ring: Open the Zip's universal split ring and thread it onto your existing breakaway switch pin

3. Route the Cable: Route the coiled Zip cable from the trailer tongue toward the front of the trailer where it will connect to the tow vehicle

4. Clip to Tow Vehicle: Attach the spring clip end to a safety chain loop or designated breakaway cable connection point on the tow vehicle

5. Verify Function: Confirm the cable has enough slack to allow normal turning without activating the switch, but will pull taut if the trailer separates

6. Inspect Before Every Tow: Check the cable and connections for wear or damage before each towing trip

A functioning breakaway system is a legal requirement in most states for trailers equipped with electric brakes. Ensure your breakaway battery is also charged and functional.
