Lippert 3500 lb Axle CSA Certified Lippert 122258 -- Left Hand 10" x 2.25" Electric Brake Assembly for 3500 lb Axles

A fully pre-assembled, drop-in replacement electric drum brake for the driver's side of trailers running 3500 lb axles. Everything mounts to a new backing plate out of the box -- swap out your worn or failed brake in a fraction of the time of a component-by-component rebuild.

Pre-Assembled Replacement That Actually Saves Time

Worn trailer brakes are a safety issue, not just a maintenance checkbox. The Lippert 122258 ships with brake shoes, hardware, magnets, and wiring leads all pre-mounted to a fresh backing plate. You cut the old wires, unbolt the old backing plate, bolt up the new assembly, and connect the leads. No pressing shoes, no setting spring tension from scratch, no loose hardware to drop in a driveway.

This assembly is designed for the left-hand (driver's side) of the trailer. The 10" drum diameter and 2.25" center hole size match the standard 3500 lb axle spec used across most mid-size travel trailers, fifth wheels, and utility trailers. The 4-hole bolt pattern is the industry standard for this axle class.

Pre-Assembled Backing Plate

Shoes, springs, hardware, and magnet are installed at the factory. Bolt on and wire in -- no rebuild from parts.

CSA Certified

Meets Canadian Standards Association requirements for electric trailer brake assemblies. Compliant for use in the US and Canada.

Broad Axle Compatibility

Fits Dexter, Fayette, Hayes, Alko, Axletek, and Lippert 3500 lb axles with the standard 4-hole 10" brake flange.

Manual Adjusting

Uses a traditional manual star-wheel adjuster. Set your shoe clearance at installation and re-adjust after the break-in period.

What Is Included

  • Left-hand (driver's side) backing plate -- fully pre-assembled
  • Brake shoes pre-mounted to backing plate
  • Electric brake magnet installed
  • All springs, adjusters, and hardware installed
  • Brake wiring leads (pigtail for splice connection)
Easy Swap Installation
The entire replacement process follows three steps: (1) cut and label the existing brake wires, (2) unbolt and remove the old backing plate assembly, (3) bolt up the new Lippert 122258 and splice the wiring leads. No special tools required beyond standard hand tools and a wire stripper.

Fitment and Compatibility

This brake assembly is designed for 3500 lb rated axles using a 10" brake drum. The backing plate uses the standard 4-hole bolt pattern with a 2.25" center hole diameter -- the same pattern used by the major axle manufacturers listed below.

  • Dexter Axle -- 3500 lb 10" electric brake applications
  • Fayette -- 3500 lb 10" electric brake applications
  • Hayes -- 3500 lb 10" electric brake applications
  • AL-KO (Alko) -- 3500 lb 10" electric brake applications
  • Axletek -- 3500 lb 10" electric brake applications
  • Lippert Components -- 3500 lb 10" electric brake applications
Left Hand vs. Right Hand
This is the left-hand (driver's side / road side in the US) assembly. The brake shoe arc and adjuster orientation differ between left and right sides. If you are replacing both sides, you will need a matching right-hand assembly (Lippert 122257 or equivalent). Verify your side before ordering.

Electric Brake System Context

This assembly works with any standard electric brake controller installed in the tow vehicle. The magnet inside the drum interacts with the rotating drum to apply the shoes proportionally based on controller output. This is not a hydraulic or surge brake -- it requires a 12V brake controller wired to the trailer's brake circuit.

Typical tow vehicle wiring supplies 12V DC to the brake output wire on the 7-way trailer connector. Each brake assembly draws approximately 3 amps at full actuation, which is within the output range of all common proportional and time-delayed brake controllers.

Break-In Period Required
New electric drum brakes require a break-in (bedding) period before they reach full stopping performance. After installation, perform 8 to 10 moderate brake applications from approximately 30 mph to allow the shoes to seat evenly against the drum surface. Re-adjust the star wheel after the first 200 miles of use.
Side-Specific -- Verify Before Ordering
This assembly is for the left side only. Installing a left-hand assembly on the right side will result in incorrect adjuster orientation and reduced braking performance. Check your existing assembly or measure from the tongue end of the trailer: left hand is the driver's side when standing behind the trailer looking toward the tongue.

Application Notes

Typical Trailer TypesTravel trailers, fifth wheels, utility trailers, horse trailers, boat trailers on 3500 lb axles
Break-In RequiredYes -- 8 to 10 moderate stops from 30 mph recommended
Re-Adjustment IntervalAfter first 200 miles, then as needed
Important Information -- Read Before Installing
  • This assembly is for the left-hand (driver's side) only. Installing on the right side will result in incorrect adjuster orientation and reduced brake performance.
  • The brake drum is NOT included. Reuse your existing 10" drum if it is within spec, or purchase a replacement drum separately.
  • New electric drum brakes require a break-in period. Do not expect full stopping performance on the first stop. Perform 8 to 10 moderate brake applications before relying on full braking force.
  • A functioning 12V electric brake controller in the tow vehicle is required. This assembly will not work with surge (hydraulic) brake actuators without additional components.
  • Always verify axle rating and drum diameter before ordering. A 3500 lb axle with a 12" drum requires a different assembly.
  • Inspect and re-adjust the star wheel after the first 200 miles. New shoe material compresses slightly during break-in, increasing shoe-to-drum clearance.
  • CSA certified for use in the US and Canada. Verify local trailer brake regulations if towing in jurisdictions with specific brake requirements.
