Lippert 12 x 2 Inch 4,000 - 7,000 lb Axles Lippert 298276 Right Hand Electric Brake Assembly

A direct-fit replacement electric brake assembly for the right-hand (passenger) side of trailer axles rated 4,000 to 7,000 lbs. Purpose-built by Lippert for straightforward installation with no drilling or modification required when replacing worn or failed electric trailer brakes.

Reliable Stopping Power for Mid- to Heavy-Duty Trailer Axles

Worn or seized electric trailer brakes are a safety hazard and a common failure point on RV trailers, fifth wheels, and tow-behind units. The Lippert 298276 is engineered as a drop-in replacement for the right-hand side, restoring proper braking performance without the guesswork of adapting an incompatible assembly.

This assembly pairs a 12-inch drum diameter with a 2-inch shoe width -- a standard combination well-suited for axles in the 4,000 to 7,000 lb range. The 5-bolt mounting flange matches the most common spindle flange configuration used on trailer axles in this weight class, making it compatible with a wide range of manufactured-home, RV, and utility trailer applications that use Lippert or equivalent axle hardware.

12 x 2 Inch Drum Spec

Industry-standard 12-inch diameter by 2-inch wide shoe configuration matches OEM fitment on mid- to heavy-duty trailer axles.

Right Hand (Passenger) Side

Specifically designed for the right-hand side of the axle. Verify your brake side before ordering -- left-hand assemblies use a different part number.

5-Bolt Mounting Flange

Bolts directly to compatible spindle backing plate flanges with no drilling or modification required on properly matched axles.

Electric Actuated

Works with standard trailer brake controllers. The electromagnet engages the shoes when the brake controller sends a 12V signal through the vehicle's trailer wiring harness.

Electric Brake Operation and Compatibility

Electric trailer brakes use an electromagnet mounted inside the brake assembly. When the tow vehicle's brake controller sends current through the breakaway or brake wiring circuit, the magnet engages the drum and applies the shoes. This assembly is designed for 12V DC brake controller systems -- the same setup used on virtually all North American RV towables.

Confirm your existing brake controller is adjusted and functioning correctly before installation. A faulty controller that under- or over-applies current will shorten the lifespan of new brake assemblies regardless of brand.

Drop-In Fitment: When replacing a Lippert-equipped axle that already uses a 12 x 2 right-hand electric brake, the 298276 installs without adapters. Reuse existing wiring connectors if they are in good condition, or replace with standard 2-pin trailer brake connectors.

Axle Weight Rating and Application

This assembly is rated for axles in the 4,000 to 7,000 lb range. Common applications include:

  • Lippert-equipped RV travel trailers and fifth wheels
  • Manufactured housing tow axles
  • Utility and equipment trailers with axles in this weight class
  • Horse and livestock trailers

Do not use this assembly on axles rated below 4,000 lbs (typically uses a smaller 10 x 1.75 or 10 x 2.25 drum) or above 7,000 lbs (may require a heavier shoe assembly or different hardware). Match the weight rating of your axle label, not the trailer GVWR.

Brake Side Matters: Right-hand (RH) and left-hand (LH) electric brake assemblies are not interchangeable. The RH unit mounts on the passenger/curb side of the trailer when viewed from the rear. Installing an LH assembly on the RH spindle will result in incorrect shoe geometry and brake failure. Verify your side before ordering.
Replace in Pairs: Brake industry best practice is to replace electric brake assemblies in axle pairs (both sides of the same axle at the same time). Mixing significantly worn assemblies with new ones on the same axle can cause uneven braking and trailer sway.
Maintenance Tip: After installation, perform a magnet draw test with an ammeter. A healthy 12 x 2 electric brake magnet typically draws 3.0 to 3.5 amps at 12V. Readings outside this range indicate a wiring or controller issue that should be resolved before towing.

Important Information
  • This is the RIGHT HAND (passenger/curb side) assembly only. Do not install on the left-hand side of the axle -- shoe geometry will be incorrect.
  • Rated for axles 4,000 to 7,000 lbs. Do not use on lighter or heavier axles outside this range.
  • Sold individually -- one assembly per order. Order two for a full axle replacement.
  • Brake drum is NOT included. Inspect and resurface or replace the drum when installing new brake shoes.
  • A functioning 12V brake controller wired through the tow vehicle is required for operation. This assembly will not function with surge/hydraulic brake actuators.
  • Verify the 5-bolt spindle flange pattern on your axle before ordering. Mismatched flange patterns require a different assembly and cannot be adapted.
  • Always torque backing plate mounting bolts to axle manufacturer specifications and verify proper shoe-to-drum clearance after installation.
