Lippert10" x 2.25"3,500 lb Axle RatedLippert 297956 Electric Trailer Brake Assembly -- Left-Hand, 10 x 2.25 Inch, 3,500 lb Axles

Purpose-built for left-side (roadside) installation on trailers and RVs with 3,500 lb axles, this Lippert electric brake assembly delivers consistent, electromagnetically actuated stopping power with a built-in parking brake function. No hydraulic lines, no fluid changes -- just a clean electric system that integrates directly with your brake controller.

Reliable Electric Braking for 3,500 lb Trailer Axles

The Lippert 297956 (vendor part 48-4548) is a direct-replacement electric brake assembly sized at 10 inches by 2.25 inches -- the standard configuration for single-axle and tandem-axle trailers running up to 3,500 lb per axle. It mounts to a standard four-bolt brake flange and is compatible with 13, 14, 14.5, and 15 inch wheels, making it a practical fit across a wide range of travel trailers, toy haulers, and utility trailers.

The assembly uses an electromagnetic actuator (magnet and armature) to engage the brake shoes when current is sent from the tow vehicle's brake controller. Manual star-wheel adjustment lets you dial in shoe clearance for optimal bite without disassembling the hub. The integrated parking brake lever adds holding capability on grades -- useful for unhitching on uneven ground.

Left-Hand Specific

Designed exclusively for left-side (driver/roadside) axle flange installation. Shoe geometry and adjuster orientation are handed -- do not swap with right-side assemblies.

Four-Bolt Mount

Bolts to the standard four-bolt brake flange pattern common on Dexter, Lippert, and most 3,500 lb trailer axles. Mounting hardware sold separately.

Parking Brake Included

Built-in parking brake lever and cable attachment point allow this assembly to serve dual duty as a holding brake when the trailer is unhitched.

Manual Star Adjuster

Inline star-wheel adjuster lets you set shoe-to-drum clearance by hand through the backing plate slot -- no special tools required.

Electric vs. Hydraulic -- Why Electric Makes Sense Here

Electric trailer brakes actuate via a signal from the tow vehicle's brake controller, with no hydraulic master cylinder, brake fluid, or surge coupler needed. That means simpler maintenance, no fluid contamination risk, and easy gain adjustment right from the cab. For most RV and light-trailer applications, electric is the preferred system -- and this Lippert assembly is built to those standards.

Brake-In Period Required: New brake shoes and drums require a break-in sequence before full friction performance is achieved. Perform 10-15 moderate stops from approximately 30 mph, allowing the brakes to cool between each stop. Do not make severe panic stops during the break-in phase.

Fitment and Compatibility

This assembly is engineered for axles rated at 3,500 lbs and fits the following wheel diameters:

  • 13 inch wheels
  • 14 inch wheels
  • 14.5 inch wheels
  • 15 inch wheels

It is compatible with standard 10 x 2.25 inch brake drums found on most 3,500 lb Dexter, Lippert (formerly Lippert/Actuant), and comparable OEM axles. Verify your existing drum diameter and backing plate bolt pattern before ordering. This is a left-hand assembly only -- a separate right-hand part number is required for the opposite side.

Sold Individually: This listing covers one (1) brake assembly for the left-hand side. For a complete axle, you will need to purchase a matching right-hand assembly separately. For a tandem-axle trailer, two left and two right assemblies are required total.

Installation Overview

Installation is a straightforward DIY job with basic hand tools. General process:

  • Remove the wheel and tire, then pull the hub and drum assembly.
  • Unbolt the existing brake assembly from the four-bolt backing plate flange.
  • Mount the new Lippert assembly to the flange (hardware sold separately).
  • Route and connect the two-wire electric lead to the axle wiring harness.
  • Reinstall the drum, hub, bearings, and wheel. Adjust star wheel to light drag, then back off slightly.
  • Perform a brake break-in sequence before loading the trailer.
Maintenance Tips: Inspect brake magnets and shoes at every wheel bearing repack interval -- typically every 12,000 miles or annually, whichever comes first. Check shoe lining thickness and magnet face for scoring. Replace magnets and shoes as a matched set for even wear. Keep grease and bearing lubricant away from the drum and shoe surfaces.
Mounting Hardware Not Included: The four mounting bolts and any associated fasteners for the backing plate are not included with this assembly. Use Grade 5 or better hardware torqued to the axle manufacturer's specification -- typically 35-45 ft-lb for 3/8-inch flange bolts.

Important Information
  • This is a LEFT-HAND (driver/roadside) assembly ONLY. Installing on the right side will result in incorrect shoe geometry and unsafe braking -- order a separate right-hand part for the opposite wheel.
  • Axle capacity must not exceed 3,500 lbs. Do not use this assembly on heavier-rated axles.
  • A brake break-in period is required. Full friction and stopping performance will not be achieved until the shoes and drum have been properly seated through 10-15 moderate stops.
  • Mounting hardware (bolts, washers) is NOT included. Use Grade 5 or better fasteners and torque to the axle manufacturer's specification.
  • Keep brake shoes, drum surface, and magnet face free of grease, oil, and bearing lubricant at all times. Contamination causes brake fade and premature wear.
  • This assembly requires a compatible in-cab electric brake controller wired to the tow vehicle -- it will not function without one.
  • Sold as a single assembly (one wheel position). A complete axle requires one left and one right assembly.
