Most RV propane systems use two cylinders connected to an automatic changeover regulator. When one tank runs out, the regulator automatically switches to the reserve. That switch happens through the pigtail -- and the quality of that connection matters every time you fire up your furnace, water heater, or range.

The RV Type 1 connector (also called an Acme or QCC1-style high-capacity connector in some contexts, but distinct from CGA 791/793) is the large-diameter, threaded hand-tight fitting used on most RV propane cylinders and many portable tanks built after 1998. It has a built-in reverse-flow check valve and thermal excess flow protection. It is not the same as a POL wrench-tighten fitting or a standard CGA 600 appliance connection. Verify your cylinder valve accepts an RV Type 1 before ordering.
The 1/4" Male Pipe Thread (MPT) end of this pigtail is designed for regulators with female 1/4" NPT inlets -- the standard inlet size on most automatic changeover regulators and many two-stage RV regulators. If your regulator has a POL inlet or a different pipe thread size, this hose does not directly connect without an adapter. Check your regulator inlet spec before ordering.
Plain rubber pigtails work, but they are vulnerable to two common failure modes in RV applications:
For seasonal or year-round RVers who store their rig outdoors, or anyone who has found evidence of rodents under their rig, the stainless overbraid version is the appropriate upgrade over a standard rubber pigtail.
NFPA 58 and most RV manufacturers recommend inspecting propane hoses and connections annually and replacing flexible propane hoses every 10 years or sooner if any damage, softening, cracking, or corrosion is found. Check the date-of-manufacture stamp on the hose fitting. Replace immediately if the inner hose shows any sign of damage even if the overbraid appears intact.
Periodically wipe the stainless overbraid with a dry cloth to remove debris. Inspect the swivel nut on the RV Type 1 end for any deformation or cross-threading. If the hand-tight nut feels loose or shows wear, replace the pigtail before the next use season.
