Camco Part 11633 / SKU 09-0005 Fits 7/8" and 15/16" Drain Openings Camco RV Water Heater Drain Plug Kit -- Everything You Need to Drain, Service, and Reseal Your Water Heater

Winterizing your RV water heater or swapping a corroded drain plug is a lot easier when you have the right tool for the job. The Camco 11633 kit gives you an angled plug wrench sized for the tight compartments most RV water heaters live in, two replacement 1/2" drain plugs, and Teflon tape to seal them properly -- all in one package. No trips back to the parts store mid-job.

Built for the Awkward Spots RV Water Heaters Hide In

Most RV water heaters are tucked into a pass-through bay or a tight exterior compartment, leaving almost no room to swing a standard socket or box wrench. Camco designed the 11633 wrench with an angled head specifically to reach into those confined spaces and break free a stuck or corroded drain plug without skinning your knuckles or stripping the plug.

The wrench's prong-style tip is also effective on petcock-style drain valves and anode rods that have a petcock integrated into the rod -- common on Suburban and Atwood/Camco water heaters. If the plug is rusted or seized, the prongs give you more bite than a smooth socket would.

Angled Wrench Head

Reaches past cabinet framing and baffles in tight RV water heater bays where a straight tool won't fit.

Prong-Tip Design

Grips standard drain plugs and petcock anode rods, including corroded or slightly damaged plug heads.

Dual Size Fit

Works with both 7/8" and 15/16" drain plug openings -- the two most common sizes across RV water heater brands.

Complete Kit

Includes two 1/2" drain plugs and Teflon tape so you can replace the plug and seal it in the same session.

What's in the Box

Camco includes every component you need for a complete drain plug service:

  • 1 angled drain plug wrench with prong tip
  • 2 replacement 1/2" NPT drain plugs (metal)
  • 1 roll of Teflon PTFE thread-seal tape
  • Printed instructions
Annual Replacement Recommended

Drain plugs on RV water heaters are exposed to repeated heating cycles, mineral deposits, and seasonal freezing. Camco recommends replacing the drain plug every year during your annual winterization or de-winterization service. The two plugs included in this kit give you one for right now and one spare for next season.

Common Applications

This kit is a practical fit for any RV owner who performs their own seasonal maintenance. Typical uses include:

  • Draining the water heater tank before winterizing
  • Flushing sediment from the tank during spring commissioning
  • Removing and inspecting or replacing an anode rod (on models with petcock-style rods)
  • Replacing a cracked, stripped, or leaking drain plug discovered during a routine inspection
Petcock and Anode Rod Compatibility

Many Suburban water heaters use a combination anode rod with a petcock drain built into the center. The prong tip on this wrench engages the petcock tabs directly, making it useful for removal even when the rod is corroded. Atwood (now Camco) water heaters typically use a straight drain plug without an anode rod -- this wrench handles those as well.

How to Use Teflon Tape on a Drain Plug

Wrap 2-3 layers of Teflon tape clockwise around the plug threads before reinstalling. This ensures a leak-free seal and makes future removal easier. Do not over-tighten -- snug by hand, then a quarter to half turn with the wrench is typically sufficient for a water-tight seal on a plastic or aluminum tank boss.

Maintenance Tip

After draining, inspect the tank boss (the threaded fitting in the water heater tank) for cracks or corrosion before reinstalling any plug. A damaged tank boss can cause leaks even with a perfect plug and fresh Teflon tape. If you see white mineral buildup, flush the threads with white vinegar before reseating the new plug.

Hot Water Hazard

Always turn off the water heater and allow the tank to cool completely before removing the drain plug. Opening a pressurized, hot water heater can cause burns. Turn off the LP gas or electric heating element, then allow at least 30-60 minutes of cooling time before proceeding.

Important Information
  • Always shut off the water heater burner or electric element and allow the tank to cool fully before removing the drain plug -- hot water under pressure causes serious burns.
  • Turn off the cold water supply and open a hot water faucet inside the RV to relieve tank pressure before loosening the drain plug.
  • Inspect the tank boss threads for cracks or stripping before reinstalling. A damaged tank boss requires professional repair -- do not force a plug into damaged threads.
  • Use Teflon tape on threads every time a new plug is installed to ensure a watertight seal and easier future removal.
  • This kit includes 1/2" NPT drain plugs. Verify your water heater drain port thread size matches before installation.
  • Drain plugs should be replaced annually per Camco's recommendation. Do not reuse a cracked or deformed plug.
  • Limited 90-day warranty covers manufacturing defects. Does not cover damage from improper installation or overtightening.
