Two very different devices exist to tame that moment, and they get confused constantly because both live in the same electrical box and both address 'startup problems.' A hard start kit is a muscle supplement: a capacitor and relay that give the compressor a stronger kick, so a motor that's struggling to start – against worn bearings, low voltage, or refrigerant pressure – gets over the hump.
