Entry-level smart surge protector for 30 amp RV service, with 3,000 Joules of surge protection, a field-replaceable surge module, and Bluetooth monitoring of live park power conditions from your smartphone.
The Hughes Autoformer PWD30 Power Watchdog is a smart surge protector built for 30 amp RV service, offering 3,000 Joules of surge protection to guard your coach's electrical system against damaging spikes. It pairs over Bluetooth with the free Power Watchdog mobile app, letting you monitor live park power conditions such as voltage, amperage, and wattage right from your smartphone. Complete LED diagnostics on the unit itself, combined with wireless fault alerts to the app, keep you informed of hazardous park power conditions such as open ground, open neutral, or reverse polarity - all without needing to plug in and guess.
If the internal surge module is ever depleted by absorbing a large spike, it can be ordered and replaced on its own rather than needing to replace the entire unit, keeping long-term ownership costs down. This is the entry point into Hughes' Power Watchdog lineup - it covers monitoring, alerting, and surge absorption, but stops short of automatically disconnecting power during a fault, which is reserved for the EPO models in the range.
Advanced surge protection absorbs damaging voltage spikes before they reach your RV's electrical system
Free Power Watchdog app displays live voltage, amperage, and wattage readings from your smartphone
Onboard LED diagnostics plus app notifications flag open ground, open neutral, and reverse polarity conditions
A depleted surge module can be replaced on its own instead of buying an entirely new unit
The PWD30 monitors and alerts on hazardous park power conditions, but it does NOT automatically disconnect power when a fault is detected. If a dangerous voltage condition occurs, the PWD30 will alert you via its LED indicator and the Power Watchdog app, but power will continue to flow to your RV unless you disconnect it yourself. If you need a unit that automatically shuts off power during an over/under-voltage event and restores it once conditions stabilize for 90 seconds, choose the PWD30-EPO instead, which adds that Emergency Power Off (EPO) function.
The PWD30 is one of several models in Hughes' Power Watchdog lineup. Make sure you're ordering the right one for your needs: PWD30 (this product) - 30A, monitoring and surge protection with wireless fault alerts, no automatic shutoff. PWD30-EPO - 30A, adds automatic Emergency Power Off shutdown during over/under-voltage events, with automatic restoration once power is stable for 90 seconds. PWD50 / PWD50-EPO - 50A versions of the above, for RVs with 50 amp service. Note: newer Gen II WiFi models (PWD30W, PWD30EPOW) are also available with WiFi in addition to Bluetooth.
The PWD30 is built specifically for 30 amp RV service. Plugging it into a mismatched service without the correct adapter can affect performance and is not a supported configuration. 30A Service: The PWD30 connects directly to a standard 30A shore power connection. 50A Service: If your RV uses 50 amp shore power, choose the PWD50 instead, which is rated for that higher amperage. Not sure which service your RV uses? Check the shore power cord and inlet - a 30A plug has three prongs, while a 50A plug has four.
Setup Steps: 1. Confirm Service Amperage: Verify your RV uses 30A shore power before connecting 2. Download the App: Get the free Power Watchdog app from the Apple App Store or Google Play 3. Connect to Shore Power: Plug the PWD30 into the campground pedestal or shore power source first 4. Check the Indicator: Confirm the unit's LED indicator shows normal power conditions before connecting your RV 5. Connect Your RV: Plug your RV's shore power cord into the PWD30's output connection 6. Pair via Bluetooth: Connect the app to the unit to monitor live voltage, amperage, and wattage readings
In The Box: • Hughes Autoformer PWD30 Power Watchdog unit • User guide / installation instructions NOT Included (Must Purchase Separately): • Replacement surge module (only needed if the original is depleted by a large spike) • 50A adapter (if connecting to a 50A pedestal)
Both units share the same surge protection and Bluetooth monitoring, but only the PWD30-EPO will automatically disconnect power during a dangerous voltage event. If hands-off automatic protection matters to you, the PWD30-EPO is the appropriate upgrade.
