Southwire 40101-001 50 Amp Reverse Polarity Automatic Transfer Switch, 120/240V RV Power

Southwire 40101-001 50 Amp Reverse Polarity Automatic Transfer Switch, 120/240V RV Power

50 amp automatic transfer switch for 120/240V RV shore power and generator power systems. Provides automatic generator-dominant source switching with reverse polarity and open ground protection. This model does not provide surge protection.

About the Southwire 40101-001 Transfer Switch

The Southwire 40101-001 is a 50 amp automatic transfer switch designed for RVs with both shore power and onboard generator power. It automatically switches the RV’s AC power source between shore and generator power, helping eliminate the need to manually move cords between sources.

This model is generator dominant. When generator power is energized, the transfer switch changes to generator power after a 30-second delay. When the generator shuts down, shore power is restored after a short 3-4 second delay.

🔁 Automatic Transfer

Automatically switches between shore power and generator power

⚡ 50A 120/240V

Designed for 50 amp RV electrical systems using 120/240V service

🛡️ Polarity Protection

Provides reverse polarity and open ground protection on shore power

⏱️ Time Delay

Transfers to generator after 30 seconds and returns to shore after 3-4 seconds

Key Features & Benefits

  • 50 Amp Automatic Transfer Switch: Transfers RV power between shore power and generator power sources
  • 120/240V RV Electrical Use: Designed for 50 amp RV electrical systems with split-phase service
  • Generator Dominant Operation: Generator power takes priority when both shore and generator power are available
  • 30-Second Generator Delay: Transfers to generator power after the generator is energized and the time delay completes
  • 3-4 Second Shore Return Delay: Returns to shore power shortly after generator power shuts down
  • Reverse Polarity Protection: Helps detect unsafe reverse polarity conditions on incoming shore power
  • Open Ground Protection: Helps prevent connection to shore power when an open ground condition is detected
  • Mechanical Interlocking Contactors: Helps prevent shore and generator contactors from engaging at the same time
  • Dual Contactor Arrangement: Designed for reliable automatic switching between two AC power sources
  • No Surge Protection: This model does not provide surge suppression; use separate surge/EMS protection if required

🚐 Common RV Applications

The Southwire 40101-001 is commonly used in motorhomes, fifth wheels, and other RVs with a 50 amp shore power connection and onboard generator. It is intended for hardwired installation between the shore power input, generator output, and RV main distribution panel.

This model is a transfer switch, not a transformer adapter. It does not change voltage, convert 30 amp service to 50 amp service, or provide surge suppression.

📋 Installation Notes

This transfer switch is hardwired between the RV’s shore power input, generator output, and main AC distribution panel. Verify 50 amp service rating, 120/240V wiring, conductor size, neutral/ground routing, generator compatibility, enclosure space, and strain relief requirements before installation.

This model does not include surge protection. If surge, low/high voltage, open neutral, or full EMS-style protection is needed, use the appropriate Southwire Surge Guard protection device or transfer switch model.

⚠️ Electrical Safety

Transfer switch installation involves 120/240V AC power, shore power, generator power, high-current wiring, neutral/ground routing, and RV electrical code requirements.

Installation should be performed by a qualified RV technician or electrician familiar with 50 amp RV electrical systems. Disconnect shore power, generator power, inverter power, and battery power before servicing.
