The dust cap (also called a grease cap) presses into the open end of the wheel hub, covering the outer wheel bearing and spindle nut. Its job is to seal out contaminants while retaining any grease applied to the bearing area. Without it, bearings are exposed every time you drive -- especially during rain, car washes, or off-pavement travel.
