Marshall Excelsior 400,000 BTU/Hr High Flow Made in USA MER425HSS-15 -- 15" Stainless Steel Braided RV Propane Pigtail Hose

Connect your QCC Type I propane cylinder to your RV's two-stage regulator with confidence. This 15-inch braided hose is built to RVIA and NFPA 1192 standards, rated for 400,000 BTU per hour, and includes an integrated excess flow safety shutoff -- protection you want between your tank and your rig.

A Pigtail Hose That Earns Its Place on a Real RV Setup

Most RVs use a two-stage propane system: a QCC Type I fitting at the tank feeds a low-pressure regulator, which then supplies the coach. The pigtail hose is the first link in that chain, and it takes the most physical stress -- bending, vibrating, and flexing every time the cylinder is swapped or the coach moves down the road.

The MER425HSS-15 replaces flimsy rubber-jacket hoses with a braided stainless steel armor layer that resists abrasion, cuts, and UV degradation. The 15-inch length gives you enough slack to position a 20 lb or 30 lb DOT cylinder without kinking the line. The MEC red Type I QCC nut is RV-approved and tightens hand-tight -- no tools or adapters needed at the tank end.

Excess Flow Shutoff

Integrated safety valve automatically restricts flow if downstream line pressure drops suddenly, such as a broken or disconnected hose. Protects against uncontrolled propane release.

Thermal Protection

Engineered to close flow in high-heat conditions, providing an added layer of protection in the event of a fire near the propane connection point.

Stainless Steel Braid

Stainless armor jacket over the inner hose core resists abrasion, road grit, UV exposure, and physical damage -- a meaningful upgrade over bare rubber pigtails.

100% Leak Tested

Every hose is individually leak tested at the factory before shipment. Brass ferrules provide reliable crimp terminations at both ends.

Connections and Fitment

The tank end uses a Female QCC Type I (Quick-Closing Coupling) fitting -- the standard connection on virtually all DOT propane cylinders sold in North America, including common 20 lb (5-gallon) and 30 lb cylinders used on RVs, travel trailers, and fifth wheels. The QCC nut threads onto the POL-style service valve hand-tight; no wrench is required.

The regulator end terminates in a 1/4-inch male inverted flare (MIF) fitting, which is the standard inlet on most dual-stage RV propane regulators. This is a right-hand thread fitting that wrenches snug with a standard open-end wrench. Always apply a PTFE-rated pipe thread compound or verify your regulator inlet uses a flare seat (not pipe thread) before connecting.

High Capacity Rating: At 400,000 BTU per hour, this hose supports the full demand of typical RV propane systems -- furnace, water heater, two-burner range, and refrigerator running simultaneously -- without flow restriction at the pigtail.

Compliance and Certifications

The MER425HSS-15 is RVIA (Recreation Vehicle Industry Association) compliant and meets NFPA 1192 (Standard on Recreational Vehicles), which governs propane system installation and components in RVs built for the North American market. These certifications matter for insurance claims and campground compliance checks.

Note on the MEC Red Type I Nut: Marshall Excelsior's proprietary red QCC nut is specifically approved for RV applications and is easily identified for inspection. It meets the 400,000 BTU/hr high-capacity classification required for dual-appliance or multi-appliance RV propane systems.

Typical Applications

  • Connecting a 20 lb or 30 lb DOT propane cylinder to an RV two-stage regulator
  • Single-cylinder or dual-cylinder automatic changeover regulator systems (one hose per cylinder)
  • Travel trailers, fifth wheels, and Class C motorhomes with external propane compartments
  • Replacing worn, cracked, or kinked factory-installed pigtail hoses
  • Upgrading from rubber-jacket pigtails to braided stainless for longevity and abrasion resistance
Maintenance Tip: Inspect your pigtail hose at the start of every camping season and after any transport over rough terrain. Look for kinks, abrasion through the braid, corrosion at the ferrules, or any hose that has taken a sharp bend. A damaged pigtail should be replaced before use -- this hose is inexpensive insurance.
Thread Type Reminder: The 1/4-inch male inverted flare (MIF) end is NOT a pipe thread. Do not apply Teflon tape or pipe dope to a flare fitting -- use a flare-to-flare connection only, and tighten with a wrench to the regulator's inlet. Mismatched thread types at the regulator can result in leaks.

Important Information -- Read Before Installing
  • This hose is for propane (LP gas) service only. Do not use with natural gas, compressed air, or any other gas or liquid.
  • Working pressure is 350 PSIG. Never install in systems that exceed this rating.
  • The regulator-side fitting is a 1/4-inch male inverted flare -- not a pipe thread. Do not use Teflon tape or pipe dope on flare connections. Use a flare-to-flare connection with a wrench; hand-tight is not sufficient at the regulator end.
  • The excess flow device may temporarily restrict flow if opened too quickly after a cylinder valve is turned on. If appliances do not light, close the cylinder valve, wait 30 seconds, then reopen slowly.
  • Inspect the hose and fittings with leak detection solution after every connection and at the start of each camping season.
  • Replace immediately if the stainless braid is damaged, the hose is kinked, or any corrosion is visible at the ferrules or fittings.
  • This product is intended for RV propane system use. Compliance with local codes and campground regulations is the installer's responsibility.
