Marshall Excelsior350 PSIG RatedMade in USAMER401-24 -- 24" LP Pigtail Hose with Excess Flow, POL x 1/4" Inverted Flare

The Marshall Excelsior MER401-24 is a 24-inch flexible LP gas pigtail hose built for RV propane systems. With a POL 7/8" left-hand nut on the tank end and a 1/4" male inverted flare on the appliance end, this hose is engineered for reliable, code-compliant connections at the cylinder. The integrated excess flow feature adds a critical layer of safety, limiting gas flow automatically if the downstream line is severed or damaged.

Reliable LP Connections for RV and Portable Propane Systems

Pigtail hoses are the flexible link between your fixed LP cylinder and the rigid copper or steel distribution lines in your RV. Unlike hard-plumbed fittings, a pigtail absorbs vibration and slight movement during travel, reducing stress on your regulator and tank valve. The MER401-24 is a workhorse in this role -- a 24-inch length that suits most standard dual-cylinder RV setups, campers, and portable propane applications.

Marshall Excelsior has manufactured LP gas equipment in Michigan since 1943. The MER401-24 reflects that pedigree: fully crimped brass ferrules at both ends, a UL-listed and CGA-approved thermoplastic hose body, and built-in thermal protection. Every hose ships ready to install -- no loose parts, no assembly required.

Excess Flow Protection

Integrated excess flow valve automatically restricts LP flow if a sudden downstream surge is detected -- an important safety feature for unattended or hard-to-monitor installations.

350 PSIG Working Pressure

Rated for 350 PSIG working pressure, well above the typical 11" W.C. service pressure of an RV LP system, with substantial safety margin built in.

Fully Crimped Brass Ferrules

Both ends are factory-crimped with brass ferrules -- no hose clamps, no field assembly. Crimped construction maintains a leak-free seal over years of use and vibration.

UL Listed and CGA Approved

The flexible thermoplastic hose body carries UL listing and CGA approval, meeting the certifications required for LP gas connections in RV, residential, and commercial applications.

Fitting Identification and Thread Details

Getting the fittings right is the single most important part of buying a pigtail hose. This hose has two distinct ends:

  • Tank end -- POL 7/8" left-hand nut: POL (Prest-O-Lite) is the standard fitting used on most DOT propane cylinders in North America. The 7/8" nut threads left-hand (counter-clockwise to tighten) directly onto the POL valve of your cylinder. No adapter is needed for standard ACME or POL cylinders equipped with a POL outlet valve.
  • Appliance end -- 1/4" male inverted flare: The 1/4" male inverted flare (also written as 1/4" MIF) is a common termination point for the copper distribution tubing inside an RV or the inlet of a two-stage regulator. This fitting connects to a 1/4" female inverted flare (1/4" FIF) port.
Direct POL Cylinder Connection: The POL nut end does not require a wrench for connection on most cylinder valves -- hand-tight plus a firm snug turn is typical. Always perform a leak test with approved soap solution after connection and before lighting any appliances.

Excess Flow Valve -- How It Works

The excess flow mechanism is housed inside the POL fitting body. Under normal operating conditions, gas flows freely at the low pressure and volume demanded by RV appliances. If downstream flow suddenly exceeds the preset threshold -- such as when a downstream line ruptures or a fitting is disconnected while the cylinder valve is open -- the valve seats itself, reducing flow to a trickle. This limits the volume of unburned propane released into the environment.

Heads Up -- Excess Flow Reset: If the excess flow valve trips, close the cylinder valve completely, wait 30 seconds, then slowly re-open it. The valve resets under low-differential-pressure conditions. If the valve trips repeatedly, inspect all downstream connections for leaks before continuing.

Thermal Protection

The MER401-24 includes built-in thermal protection on the hose assembly. In the event of fire or sustained high external heat near the hose, the thermal protection is designed to limit LP flow, reducing the risk of continued fuel supply to a fire source. This feature is required by some codes for enclosed or semi-enclosed LP installations.

Important Information
  • This hose is for LP (liquefied petroleum) gas service only. Do not use with natural gas, compressed air, oxygen, or other gases.
  • Never exceed the 350 PSIG rated working pressure. Standard RV two-stage regulators operate well below this limit under normal conditions.
  • Always perform a leak test with an approved propane-safe leak detection solution after making any LP connection. Do not use an open flame to check for leaks.
  • Inspect the hose for cracks, abrasion, kinking, or damage before each use. Replace if any deterioration is observed -- do not repair a damaged LP hose.
  • The excess flow valve will not protect against slow leaks at fittings -- it activates only on large, sudden flow increases. Proper connection and leak testing remain essential.
  • Do not exceed the 400 lb. pull test rating. Route and secure the hose to prevent tension or abrasion against sharp edges during travel.
  • This hose has a limited 5-year manufacturer warranty. Replace on or before the expiration of that period regardless of visible condition.
