Standard hook-style bike carriers grip the top tube -- the horizontal bar running from the head tube to the seat tube. Bikes designed without that bar (or with angled, curved, or sloped top tubes) can slip, tilt, or put harmful stress on frame welds when hung directly. A bike beam creates that missing horizontal anchor point without modifying the bike itself.
