Valterra10-Gallon FitmentPermanent MountValterra P23504LFVP Permanent Mount Water Heater Bypass Kit -- 10 Gallon

Stop pouring antifreeze into a tank that doesn't need it. The Valterra P23504LFVP bypass kit installs once and stays in place, letting you redirect antifreeze around your 10-gallon water heater every fall and open the system back up every spring -- no replumbing required, season after season.

Bypass Your Water Heater, Not Your Budget

When you winterize an RV without a bypass kit, every drop of RV antifreeze you pump into the system has to fill the water heater tank before it reaches the rest of your plumbing. On a 10-gallon heater, that's 10 gallons of antifreeze going into a tank you don't need to protect -- straight antifreeze wasted before a single line is covered.

The Valterra P23504LFVP solves that permanently. Its brass valves are designed to stay installed year-round. In the fall, rotate the valves to bypass mode and antifreeze flows directly into your cold-water lines, skipping the heater entirely. Come spring, rotate back to normal flow, drain and flush the system, and you're done.

Saves 10+ Gallons Per Season

Bypasses the full 10-gallon tank volume so antifreeze goes only where it needs to -- into your supply and drain lines, not a tank that's already protected.

Permanent Brass Valves

Solid brass valve bodies resist corrosion and stay installed between seasons. No removing and reinstalling cheap plastic fittings every year.

Simple Valve Rotation

Switching between bypass and normal flow takes seconds. Turn the valves to redirect flow -- no tools, no guesswork, clearly defined positions.

One-Time Installation

Install once on your 10-gallon heater's inlet and outlet ports. The kit stays plumbed in permanently, ready for the next winterizing or de-winterizing cycle.

How a Bypass Kit Works

Your RV water heater has a cold-water inlet and a hot-water outlet. Under normal operation, cold water enters, heats up, and exits to your fixtures. A bypass kit adds valves at both ports plus a crossover line between them. In bypass mode, the inlet valve closes off flow into the tank, the outlet valve closes off flow out of the tank, and a third valve opens the crossover so water or antifreeze travels directly from inlet to outlet -- around the tank entirely.

The P23504LFVP is configured specifically for 10-gallon heater geometry, with the correct crossover length and valve spacing to match the standard 10-gallon port layout used on Atwood (now Dometic) and Suburban water heaters common in RVs.

Winterizing Benefit: A single bottle of RV antifreeze (typically 1 quart) now goes directly into your supply lines instead of being absorbed by a 10-gallon tank. Most rigs require 2-3 bottles total to fully protect all lines -- without a bypass kit that number jumps to 12-13 bottles minimum for a 10-gallon heater install.

Installation Overview

The P23504LFVP mounts directly to the cold-water inlet and hot-water outlet connections on your water heater. Both ports use standard 1/2 in. NPT threads common to Suburban and Atwood/Dometic 10-gallon heaters. The kit includes all valves and the bypass line -- you will need Teflon tape and basic plumbing tools (adjustable wrench or channel-lock pliers). No soldering required.

  • Shut off water supply and drain the water heater before installation.
  • Remove existing inlet/outlet connections at the heater.
  • Thread the bypass kit valve assemblies onto the heater ports using Teflon tape on all male NPT threads.
  • Connect your existing supply and hot-water lines to the kit's outer ports.
  • Test for leaks before closing up the water heater access panel.
Tip: Label the valves or take a photo of bypass vs. normal position before closing the access panel. This makes future switching faster and prevents accidental bypassing during regular use.
De-Winterizing: When spring arrives, rotate valves to normal (non-bypass) mode, reconnect city water or run your pump, and flush the system thoroughly before using hot water. Allow the water heater to fill completely before firing the burner or activating the electric element -- running a heater dry can damage the element or tank lining.

Important Information
  • This kit is sized for 10-gallon water heaters only. Using it on a 6-gallon heater requires a different kit (Valterra offers separate kits for 6-gallon tanks).
  • Always drain and depressurize the water heater before installing or adjusting any bypass valve components.
  • Do not fire the water heater burner or electric heating element while the tank is in bypass mode -- the tank will not fill and running it dry can permanently damage the heating element or tank.
  • Inspect all threaded connections for leaks after installation and after each seasonal switch between bypass and normal mode.
  • This kit does not include a water heater anode rod, pressure relief valve, or drain plug -- those components remain with your existing water heater.
  • Not for use with tankless (on-demand) water heater systems -- bypass kits apply to tank-style heaters only.
