Crosswinds on open highway stretches turned every drive into a white-knuckle endurance test. And the vague, wandering feeling at highway speeds made him feel like the rig was always on the verge of going where it wanted to go rather than where he pointed it.

He was genuinely considering taking a $30,000 loss on a rig he’d owned for less than two years—not because of the motorhome itself, but because of how it made him feel behind the wheel. That conversation is the reason I’m passionate about ride control products. Before diving into the products, it’s worth understanding why RVs are particularly susceptible to steering wander and road sensitivity. The physics are straightforward: RVs have large, flat side panels that act like sails in crosswinds. They have long wheelbases with relatively narrow track widths, which makes them sensitive to lateral forces. They’re heavy, which means more momentum to control during directional changes. And their factory steering and suspension components are generally adequate but not generous—they’re specced to meet the vehicle’s rated capacity, not to exceed it.

When you add real-world factors—passengers, full water tanks, loaded storage bays, a full fuel tank—the actual operating weight often approaches or exceeds the factory specifications. The suspension compresses more than designed, the steering geometry changes, and the entire vehicle becomes more responsive to external forces like crosswinds, passing trucks, and road surface irregularities. This is when the “wander” feeling emerges—the sensation that the vehicle isn’t tracking straight, requires constant steering input, and responds unpredictably to road conditions.

The solution is upgrading the three systems that control how your RV responds to these forces: the steering stabilizer (which dampens front-end oscillation and provides directional stability), the shock absorbers (which control how quickly the suspension reacts to road inputs), and the spring system (which maintains proper ride height and weight distribution under load).


Solution 1: Steering Stabilizer — The Foundation of Directional Control

Heat is the enemy of shock absorber performance—as a shock heats up from continuous work, its dampening fluid becomes less viscous, and the shock becomes less effective. This is called “shock fade,” and it’s why factory shocks feel progressively worse on a long highway drive. Replacing shocks in pairs (both fronts or both rears at the same time) is essential for balanced handling. A new shock on one side and a worn shock on the other creates asymmetric suspension response that makes handling worse, not better. Budget for all four if your factory shocks are more than three years old or have more than 50,000 miles on them.


Solution 3: Supplemental Springs — Maintaining Ride Height Under Load

When your RV or tow vehicle squats in the rear under load, the entire suspension geometry changes. The front end lifts, reducing steering weight and front tire grip. The rear end compresses, reducing suspension travel and bottoming out over bumps. The headlight aim shifts upward, blinding oncoming drivers. And the overall handling balance shifts toward oversteer, which makes the vehicle feel unstable in corners and during lane changes. The SuperSprings SumoSprings address this problem by adding progressive-rate support to your existing suspension, restoring proper ride height and weight distribution under load.

SumoSprings are a urethane spring supplement that installs between the frame and the axle (or within the existing spring pack, depending on the application). They work automatically, all the time, without any input from the driver.


Solution 4: Anti-Sway Bar — Reducing Body Roll and Improving Stability

Body roll—the tendency of the RV to lean outward in turns, during lane changes, and when hit by crosswinds—is directly addressed by an anti-sway bar. Installation requires getting under the vehicle and bolting the bar to the frame and axle mounting points. It’s not a complex job, but it does require proper mounting hardware and correct torque specifications. I recommend professional installation unless you’re experienced with suspension work, because an improperly mounted sway bar can actually make handling worse by binding or introducing asymmetric resistance.
