B&W Hitches 16,000 lb GTW Class V Rated B&W Hitches HB94050 -- 2-5/16" Chrome Trailer Ball, 16K Capacity

When you are towing a heavy fifth-wheel trailer, large travel trailer, or horse trailer at the limits of what your truck can handle, the trailer ball is not the place to cut corners. The B&W Hitches HB94050 is a 2-5/16-inch chrome trailer ball rated at 16,000 lbs gross trailer weight, built to the exacting tolerances that B&W is known for in the towing industry. If you trust B&W for your gooseneck or fifth-wheel products, this ball belongs on your hitch.

Heavy-Duty Chrome Ball for Serious Towing

The HB94050 is designed for Class V towing applications -- the highest common rating for receiver-style hitches and ball mounts. With a 2-5/16-inch ball diameter, it mates with couplers found on most large travel trailers, toy haulers, horse trailers, and equipment trailers in the 12,000 to 16,000 lb range. The chrome finish resists corrosion during long hauls, through rain, mud, and road salt, while the precision-machined ball surface keeps coupler wear to a minimum.

B&W Hitches manufactures this ball in the USA and holds the same quality standard applied to their Turnoverball gooseneck systems and Companion fifth-wheel hitches. If you are upgrading from a generic stamped-steel ball or replacing a worn unit, the HB94050 is a direct step up in material quality and dimensional accuracy.

16,000 lb GTW Rating

Full Class V gross trailer weight capacity -- handles the heaviest trailers in the travel trailer and equipment categories without being overmatched.

2-5/16" Ball Diameter

The correct size for Class IV and Class V couplers. Fits the vast majority of large travel trailer, toy hauler, and horse trailer tongue couplers.

Chrome Finish

Polished chrome resists rust and surface corrosion. Keeps the coupler interface smooth for easy hookup and reduced wear on both ball and coupler socket.

B&W Precision Manufacturing

Machined to tight tolerances by the same company that builds Turnoverball and Companion hitch systems. Consistent shank diameter and thread for secure fitment.

What Is the 2-5/16" Ball Used For?

The 2-5/16-inch ball is the largest of the three common trailer ball diameters (1-7/8", 2", and 2-5/16"). It is required for any coupler rated above roughly 10,000 lbs and is the standard size for:

  • Large bumper-pull travel trailers (typically 25 ft and longer)
  • Toy haulers with heavy loaded weights
  • Horse and livestock trailers
  • Equipment and utility trailers over 10,000 lbs GTW
  • Boat trailers with larger vessels in the 12,000-16,000 lb range

Always match the ball diameter to the coupler stamped on your trailer tongue. Using a 2" ball in a 2-5/16" coupler is a dangerous mismatch and is illegal in most states.

Coupler Compatibility: The 2-5/16" ball fits all standard SAE-spec 2-5/16" adjustable and fixed couplers from major trailer manufacturers including Dexter, Atwood, and Reese. If your coupler lid stamps "2-5/16", this ball is the correct match.

Shank and Thread Fitment

The HB94050 uses a standard 1-inch diameter shank with a 1-inch-14 UNF thread -- the industry-standard thread specification for 2-5/16" trailer balls at this weight rating. It is compatible with ball mounts that accept a 1-inch shank, which covers the overwhelming majority of Class IV and Class V ball mount platforms from Reese, Draw-Tite, B&W, Cequent, and others.

The shank length determines clearance between the ball mount platform and the underside of the coupler. Verify the required shank length for your specific ball mount before ordering. B&W offers multiple shank length variants in the HB940xx series for different application needs.

Nut and Torque: A standard 1-1/4" hex nut is used to secure the ball to the ball mount shank hole. Torque to the ball mount manufacturer's specification -- typically 150-300 ft-lbs for 16K-rated applications. Use a quality torque wrench; hand-tight is never adequate at this weight class.

B&W Hitches Product Family Context

B&W Hitches is best known for their Turnoverball gooseneck hitch systems and the Companion OEM fifth-wheel hitch series. Their trailer balls and ball mounts are manufactured to the same quality standards and are designed to complement their hitch platforms. The HB94050 is part of B&W's trailer ball lineup, with part numbers in the HB940xx range covering different shank lengths and finish options at the 2-5/16" / 16K rating level.

Maintenance Tip: Apply a light coat of marine-grade grease to the ball surface before each season or every few trips. This reduces coupler wear, prevents corrosion between the ball and coupler socket, and makes uncoupling easier after a long haul. Wipe excess grease off before hitching to avoid attracting dirt.
Also Consider: If you are setting up a complete ball mount assembly, pair this ball with a B&W ball mount rated at or above 16,000 lbs GTW to maintain a properly rated system. Mixing a high-rated ball with an under-rated mount defeats the capacity of the ball.

Important Information -- Read Before Installing
  • This ball is rated at 16,000 lbs GTW. Never tow a trailer whose gross trailer weight exceeds the ratings of the ball, ball mount, hitch receiver, AND tow vehicle -- all four must meet or exceed the trailer's actual weight.
  • The coupler on your trailer MUST be stamped 2-5/16". Using a 2-5/16" ball in a 1-7/8" or 2" coupler is extremely dangerous and illegal. Always verify coupler size before hitching.
  • Torque the retaining nut to the specification required by your ball mount manufacturer. Re-check torque after the first 50 miles of towing with a new installation.
  • Inspect the ball surface before each use for pitting, cracks, or deformation. A visibly damaged ball must be replaced immediately -- do not tow on a compromised ball.
  • The nut required to secure this ball to the ball mount may or may not be included. Verify what is in the box at time of receipt. A standard 1-inch-14 UNF hex nut is the correct fastener if not included.
  • This product is intended for on-road towing applications. Off-road use, overload, or shock loading can cause failure at weights below the stated rating.
