Lippert 2,200 Lb Axle Rating Pre-Greased and Ready to Install Lippert 814198 Idler Hub Assembly -- 5 on 4.5" Bolt Pattern, 5.5" Hub Flange

A direct-replacement idler hub assembly built for light trailer and RV axles. The Lippert 814198 arrives fully assembled with bearing cones, seals, and grease already installed -- mount it and roll. Solid iron construction and a 2,200 lb axle rating make it a reliable upgrade or like-for-like swap on a wide range of travel trailers, utility trailers, and boat trailers running a 5 on 4.5" bolt pattern.

Pre-Assembled Hub Ready for the Road

Replacing a worn or damaged idler hub does not have to mean a trip to the shop. The Lippert 814198 comes out of the box with bearing cups pressed in place, bearing cones seated, inner and outer seals installed, and packed with grease -- so installation comes down to removing the old hub, sliding the new one onto the spindle, and securing the castle nut. No bearing press, no separate seal driver, no guesswork on grease quantity.

The hub is cast from solid iron for long-term durability under the cyclic loading that trailer wheels see on highways and rough secondary roads. The 5.5" hub flange diameter and 5 on 4.5" bolt circle match the OEM dimensions used on many Lippert, Dexter, and similar light-duty axle assemblies rated at or near 2,200 lbs per axle.

Solid Iron Hub Body

Cast solid iron construction resists cracking and deformation under sustained axle loads and road vibration.

Fully Pre-Assembled

Bearing cones, cups, inner and outer seals, and grease are installed at the factory -- no shop press required for installation.

5 on 4.5" Bolt Pattern

Matches OEM wheel bolt circles common to light RV trailers, boat trailers, and utility trailers running 13" to 15" wheels.

1-Year Limited Warranty

Backed by Lippert's limited 1-year manufacturer warranty for defects in materials and workmanship.

What Is an Idler Hub?

An idler hub is used on non-braking axle positions -- typically the front axle on a tandem-axle trailer, or any axle on a single-axle trailer without brakes. Unlike a brake hub or drum, the idler hub has no internal brake hardware. It simply provides the wheel mounting face, houses the bearings that allow the hub to spin freely on the spindle, and transfers vertical and lateral loads from the wheel into the axle.

Idler hubs wear out through bearing failure, seal leakage leading to grease contamination, or physical damage from a road hazard. Because the hub and bearings are an integrated safety component, replacing the entire pre-packed assembly at once is the recommended practice rather than re-using old cups or cones.

Ready to Install: Factory-packed bearing cones and seals eliminate the most time-consuming steps of a traditional hub service. Slide the hub onto a clean, dimensionally correct spindle, install the washer and castle nut per the axle manufacturer torque spec, and install a new cotter pin. No bearing press needed.

Fitment and Compatibility

The 814198 is designed to fit light-duty trailer axles using the following specifications:

  • Bolt pattern: 5 on 4.5" (5 studs on a 4.5" bolt circle diameter)
  • Hub flange diameter: 5.5"
  • Stud size: 1/2" wheel studs
  • Compatible wheel sizes: 13" to 15"
  • Axle weight rating: 2,200 lbs per axle

This hub is commonly used as a replacement on Lippert-equipped travel trailers and fifth wheels, as well as trailers built with comparable Dexter-style 2,200 lb axles sharing the same spindle and bearing dimensions. Verify your existing spindle diameter and bearing part numbers before ordering if your trailer has been modified or re-axled.

Idler vs. Brake Hub: The 814198 is an idler hub and does not include or accept brake hardware. If your axle position uses electric drum brakes, you need a brake drum assembly, not this part. Confirm your axle position type before ordering.

What Is Included

  • 1 x Lippert 814198 solid iron idler hub
  • Inner and outer bearing cones (pre-installed)
  • Inner and outer bearing cups (pressed into hub)
  • Inner and outer grease seals (pre-installed)
  • Grease fill (pre-packed at factory)
Not Included: Castle nut, cotter pin, hub cap or dust cap, and lug nuts are not included. Use a new cotter pin every time the hub is removed and reinstalled. Reuse of old cotter pins is not recommended.
Maintenance Tip: Even with a new pre-packed hub, inspect the spindle surface for scoring or wear before installation. A worn spindle will damage new bearing races prematurely. Check bearing adjustment and hub end-play after the first 50 miles of use on a new hub installation.

Important Information
  • This is an idler hub only -- it does not accept or include brake hardware. Do not use on brake axle positions.
  • Maximum axle weight rating is 2,200 lbs. Do not install on axles rated above this capacity.
  • Verify your bolt pattern (5 on 4.5"), stud size (1/2"), and spindle dimensions before ordering. Incompatible spindle dimensions will result in improper bearing seating.
  • Castle nut, cotter pin, dust/hub cap, and lug nuts are not included -- have these on hand before beginning installation.
  • Always install a new cotter pin during each installation. Never reuse a cotter pin.
  • Torque castle nut to the axle spindle manufacturer's specification. Incorrect bearing preload causes premature bearing failure.
  • Inspect hub and bearing adjustment after the first 50 miles of use following installation.
