Replacement breakaway switch for trailers with electric brakes. Activates trailer brakes automatically if the trailer separates from the tow vehicle. Silver contact points, nylon case, high-temp weldable metal mounting tab, nylon pull pin. Wiring harness included. DOT-approved. Fits CURT Soft-Trac 1 and Soft-Trac 2 breakaway kits.
The CURT 52011 is a replacement breakaway switch for trailer breakaway systems — the component that acts as the trigger point between the tow vehicle and the trailer's emergency brake activation. A cable runs from the tow vehicle's hitch to this switch's pull pin; in a normal hookup the cable stays slack. If the trailer accidentally separates, the cable goes taut and pulls the pin from the switch, closing the circuit and applying the trailer's electric brakes — bringing the runaway trailer to a stop.
Silver contact points deliver a reliable electrical connection and resist corrosion over time. The nylon case protects the internal contacts from road debris and moisture. The high-temperature metal mounting tab is weldable for a permanent trailer frame installation, and the nylon pull pin is the consumable element that releases the switch during an actual breakaway or test. Wiring harness included. Designed for use with CURT Soft-Trac 1 and Soft-Trac 2 complete breakaway kit systems, and DOT-approved. Sold individually.
• 1x Breakaway switch with nylon case • Nylon pull pin • Wiring harness Mounting hardware not included. Complete CURT breakaway kit options: • 52040 — Soft-Trac 1 breakaway kit (switch + battery + case) • 52041 — Soft-Trac 2 breakaway kit (switch + battery + case + charger)
The breakaway switch connects to the trailer's brake wiring and its own dedicated battery (sold separately as part of a complete kit). A cable — typically 48" long — runs from the switch's pull pin to a secure point on the tow vehicle's hitch or frame. Under normal towing, the cable is slack and the pin stays inserted, keeping the switch open (brakes off). If the trailer separates from the tow vehicle, the cable pulls tight and yanks the pin free, closing the switch and connecting the battery directly to the trailer's electric brakes — stopping the trailer independently of the tow vehicle. Test annually: with the trailer safely parked, pull the pin manually to confirm the brakes activate. Re-insert the pin after testing.
• 52011 (this item) — Switch only (replacement) • 52040 — Soft-Trac 1 Kit: switch + 12V battery + storage case • 52041 — Soft-Trac 2 Kit: switch + 12V battery + storage case + battery charger • 52030 — Replacement 12V breakaway battery • 52025 — Replacement breakaway cable, 48" If building a system from scratch, the complete Soft-Trac 2 kit (52041) is the most turnkey option — it includes the charger to keep the breakaway battery topped off.
