Valterra 120V / 1440W 6-Gallon Direct Fit Hott Rod 6-Gallon Water Heater Replacement Heating Element

When your Hott Rod water heater stops heating -- or heats slowly -- the element is almost always the culprit. Valterra's DGR6P2PB drops straight into the 6-gallon Hott Rod tank so you can restore full hot-water capacity without replacing the entire unit. At just 1 lb and 8 inches long, it ships easily and installs in under 30 minutes with basic hand tools.

Restore Hot Water to Your Hott Rod System Fast

The Valterra Hott Rod is a popular electric-only or dual-source (propane plus electric) add-on water heater used in Class A, Class B, Class C motorhomes, fifth wheels, and travel trailers. The system is designed to fit inside a standard 6-gallon Atwood or Suburban water heater tank opening, converting or supplementing an existing propane unit with 120V shore-power heating.

Over time -- especially in hard-water areas -- the immersion heating element accumulates mineral scale, corrodes, or simply burns out. This DGR6P2PB element is the correct replacement part for the 6-gallon Hott Rod tank. It matches the original element's thread size, wattage, and voltage so no wiring changes or plumbing modifications are needed.

Direct-Fit Replacement

Threaded to match the original Hott Rod 6-gallon element boss. No adapters, no drilling -- unscrew the old, thread in the new.

120V Shore-Power Ready

Rated at 120V AC, compatible with standard RV 30-amp and 50-amp shore-power hookups and most campground pedestals.

1440W Heating Power

Matches OEM wattage output to maintain full recovery speed -- typically 40-60 minutes for a 6-gallon tank from cold.

Compact and Lightweight

At 8.0 x 2.0 x 1.0 inches and just 1 lb, this element is easy to carry as a spare and quick to swap roadside.

About the Valterra Hott Rod System

The Hott Rod line was developed to give RVers electric water heating capability using the existing tank of a 6-gallon or 10-gallon propane water heater. The kit installs a new drain-port element, a thermostat, and wiring that connects to 120V AC shore power. This part -- the DGR6P2PB -- is the element-only replacement for the 6-gallon version. It is sold separately from the thermostat and any wiring harness.

Common reasons to replace this element include:

  • Water no longer heats on electric mode despite the thermostat clicking on
  • Visible corrosion or scale buildup on the element body
  • Element has been continuously submerged in water with high mineral content
  • Tripped GFCI or breaker traced to the water heater circuit
  • Annual preventive maintenance during a full-season winterization service
Element-Only Part: This listing is for the heating element only (part DGR6P2PB). The thermostat, wiring harness, gasket, and element washer/seal are not included. If you are doing a full Hott Rod service, verify whether your existing gasket or seal is reusable before installation.

Installation Overview

Replacing the element is a straightforward DIY task for most RV owners:

  • Turn off the 120V AC breaker feeding the water heater circuit
  • Open the pressure-relief valve and drain the tank completely via the drain plug
  • Disconnect the two element lead wires (note orientation)
  • Use a 1-1/2 inch element wrench or socket to unthread the old element counterclockwise
  • Inspect the element port threads for corrosion or damage
  • Thread in the new DGR6P2PB element hand-tight, then torque to approximately 20 ft-lbs
  • Reconnect lead wires, close the drain, refill the tank, and restore power
Flush Before You Fire: After installing a new element, make sure the tank is fully purged of air before restoring 120V power. Running an element dry -- even briefly -- can damage it immediately.
Maintenance Tip: In hard-water regions, inspect and descale your Hott Rod element at least once per season. A light coating of white mineral scale is normal; heavy pitting or flaking scale indicates it is time to replace the element regardless of electrical continuity readings.

Compatibility

This element is designed for the Valterra Hott Rod 6-gallon system. The Hott Rod kit is engineered to fit inside the tank of a standard Atwood (now Dometic) or Suburban 6-gallon RV water heater. As a result, this replacement element is compatible with any Hott Rod 6-gallon installation regardless of which OEM propane heater brand houses it.

If your Hott Rod is the 10-gallon version, you will need the corresponding 10-gallon element (a different part number). Check the label on your existing element or on the Hott Rod control box to confirm your tank size before ordering.

Recommended Companion Parts: Consider pairing this element with a fresh Hott Rod thermostat and element gasket/seal kit to complete a full service while the tank is already drained. Valterra offers these components separately under the Hott Rod accessory line.

Important Information
  • Element only: This part does not include a thermostat, gasket, seal, or any wiring. Confirm all other components are in good condition before installation.
  • 120V AC only: This is not a 12V DC element. Do not attempt to power it from a battery or DC source.
  • Drain tank fully before removal: Removing the element from a tank with water under pressure can cause scalding injury and water damage inside the RV.
  • Dry-fire damage: Energizing the element before the tank is completely filled with water will permanently damage the element and voids any warranty.
  • Verify tank size: This element is rated for the 6-gallon Hott Rod only. Using it in a 10-gallon installation will result in under-heating and possible thermostat issues.
  • Disconnect AC power first: Always switch off the dedicated water heater breaker and confirm power is off with a meter before disconnecting element leads.
  • Hard-water areas: Scale buildup can cause early element failure. Consider a whole-rig water filter or periodic element inspection in areas with high mineral content water.
