A direct-replacement electric brake assembly for the left-hand (curbside) side of your trailer axle. Built to Lippert specifications for 8000 lb capacity axles, this drum brake assembly delivers reliable electric-actuated stopping power for travel trailers, fifth wheels, and utility trailers. If your curbside brake shoes, magnet, or backing plate are worn or damaged, this complete assembly gets you back on the road without piecemeal sourcing.
The Lippert 298277 is engineered for trailers running 8000 lb rated axles -- a common capacity found on larger travel trailers, fifth wheels, and horse or cargo trailers. The left-hand designation means this assembly mounts on the curbside (passenger side in the US), where the brake magnet engages and the shoes arc against the drum in the correct geometry for that wheel position.
This is a complete brake assembly, meaning the backing plate, brake shoes, actuating magnet, and associated hardware are integrated as a unit. Mounting hardware is sold separately -- plan ahead if you are doing a full replacement at the same time as hub or drum service.
Built for the curbside axle position. Shoe arc and magnet geometry are handed -- do not substitute a right-hand assembly on this side.
Designed to work inside a 12.25 inch diameter by 3.38 inch wide drum, the standard size for 8000 lb trailer axle applications.
Mounts via a 4-bolt flange pattern with studs to the axle spindle flange. Verify your axle flange matches before ordering.
Integrates with your trailer's 7-way electric brake controller circuit. Compatible with standard 12V brake controllers used in RV towing setups.
Electric trailer brakes work by energizing an electromagnet mounted on the brake assembly. When the tow vehicle's brake controller sends current through the 7-way connector, the magnet is attracted to the spinning drum, which mechanically actuates the brake shoes outward against the drum interior. Proper function depends on a calibrated brake controller and clean, consistent 12V power delivery from the tow vehicle.
The 298277 assembly is compatible with standard electric brake controllers (proportional or time-delayed) wired through a 7-way RV-blade trailer connector. It is not designed for hydraulic-over-electric or surge brake systems.
This assembly bolts to the axle spindle flange using a 4-bolt pattern. Before ordering, confirm your axle's flange bolt circle and that your drums measure 12.25 inches in diameter and 3.38 inches wide. Drums are not included -- if your drums are at or past minimum thickness, replace them at the same time.
