CURT MFG3-to-2 Wire ConversionBuilt-In Circuit ProtectionCURT 56175 -- 3-to-2 Wire Circuit Protector Converter for Trailer Wiring

When your tow vehicle runs separate brake and turn signals but your trailer uses a combined stop/turn system, you need more than just a wiring adapter -- you need protection. The CURT 56175 converts your vehicle's 3-wire lighting circuit to a 2-wire output while shielding the tow vehicle's electronics from shorts, overloads, and backfeed current that can damage modern body control modules (BCMs) and fuse panels.

Protect Your Tow Vehicle While Bridging Two Wiring Worlds

Newer trucks and SUVs -- especially those from Ford, GM, Ram, and Toyota -- use a 3-wire lighting system: separate wires for left turn, right turn, and brake. Many older trailers, boat trailers, utility trailers, and cargo trailers were built around a 2-wire system where the brake light and turn signal share a single filament on each side. Plug a 2-wire trailer directly into a 3-wire vehicle without a converter and you risk blown fuses, damaged BCMs, or erratic lighting behavior.

The CURT 56175 solves this with an inline circuit protector that diodes the two circuits together safely, preventing backfeed from the trailer from flowing into the wrong circuit on the tow vehicle. It installs between the vehicle's trailer connector and the trailer's wiring plug with no splicing required on most applications.

3-to-2 Wire Conversion

Combines separate brake and turn signal circuits from the tow vehicle into a single combined stop/turn output for 2-wire trailer systems.

Built-In Circuit Protection

Diode-based protection prevents backfeed current from feeding into the wrong vehicle circuit, protecting sensitive BCMs and fuse boxes.

No-Splice Installation

Plugs inline between your existing vehicle connector and trailer plug. No cutting, no crimping, no tapping into factory wiring on most setups.

Compact and Weather-Resistant

Small footprint -- 7 x 4 x 2 inches -- fits easily in the hitch area. Designed to hold up in the exposed, road-spray environment under a trailer tongue.

Who Needs the CURT 56175?

This converter is the right solution when all of the following are true:

  • Your tow vehicle has a 3-wire lighting system (separate brake and turn wires) -- common on 1999-and-newer domestic trucks and SUVs
  • Your trailer uses a 2-wire system -- one wire per side handles both stop and turn functions (common on boat trailers, older utility trailers, older travel trailers with basic lighting packages)
  • You are using a flat 4-pin connector or wiring harness compatible with the CURT T-One or custom-fit harness lineup
Ideal Applications: Towing a boat trailer, landscape trailer, ATV hauler, or older cargo trailer behind a late-model pickup or SUV. Also useful when reusing a legacy trailer behind a new truck without rewiring the entire trailer harness.

How 3-Wire vs. 2-Wire Systems Differ

In a 3-wire tow vehicle, the left brake, right brake, and running lights each have dedicated wires. The turn signal and brake signals are kept separate. In a 2-wire trailer, each side of the trailer has only one signal wire -- it carries both the turn blink and the solid brake signal on the same circuit. Without a converter, plugging these together creates a feedback path: current from one circuit bleeds into the other, which can cause the turn signals to lock on, trigger DTC fault codes, or blow fuses in the tow vehicle.

The 56175 uses internal diodes to merge the brake and turn outputs from the vehicle into a single output on each side, blocking any reverse current flow back into the vehicle harness.

Note on LED Trailers: If your trailer uses LED lights, verify that total current draw per side stays within the harness rating. Low-draw LED trailers may also require a load resistor or LED-compatible flasher relay on the tow vehicle to prevent hyper-flashing -- this is a separate issue from the 3-to-2 conversion itself.

Installation Overview

Installation is straightforward and requires no special tools on most trucks and SUVs equipped with a factory or aftermarket 4-flat or 7-way connector:

  • Locate the existing trailer connector at the rear of the tow vehicle
  • Plug the 56175 inline between the vehicle connector and the trailer plug
  • Secure the converter housing to avoid road contact -- zip-tie to the hitch receiver or trailer tongue bracket
  • Test all functions: running lights, left turn, right turn, and brake lights before departure
Maintenance Tip: Inspect the converter housing and connections seasonally. Road salt, moisture, and vibration are the primary failure modes for any inline wiring component. Dielectric grease on the connector pins extends service life significantly.

CURT Wiring Product Family Context

The 56175 fits within CURT's broad trailer wiring solutions lineup, which includes T-One vehicle-specific harnesses, universal wiring kits, wire connectors, adapters, and electrical accessories. CURT part numbers in the 56000-series generally cover electrical converters, adapters, and circuit protectors designed to bridge compatibility gaps between tow vehicles and trailers. If your application requires a 2-to-3 wire conversion (trailer is 3-wire, vehicle is 2-wire), that is a separate product -- confirm which end is 3-wire before ordering.

Pair With: A CURT T-One custom-fit harness for your tow vehicle for a complete no-splice wiring solution from vehicle tail light to trailer plug.

Important Information
  • This converter works only when the tow vehicle is 3-wire and the trailer is 2-wire. Verify which end is which before ordering -- installing it backwards will not provide the correct conversion.
  • Do not use this converter as a substitute for proper wiring repair. If either the vehicle or trailer wiring has damaged insulation, corroded grounds, or broken circuits, address those issues first.
  • LED trailer lights with very low current draw can cause hyper-flashing on some vehicles. This is a flasher relay compatibility issue -- separate from the 3-to-2 conversion this unit provides.
  • Secure the converter body away from road surfaces, exhaust heat, and direct water spray to prevent premature housing failure.
  • Always verify all trailer lighting functions (running, brake, left turn, right turn) with a second person or trailer light tester before towing on public roads.
