It converts a 3-wire vehicle system to function with a 2-wire trailer system, and its potted enclosure seals the electrical components in a solid compound that protects against moisture, impacts, and vibration — reliable even when mounted outside, underneath the vehicle. This is a universal converter, not a vehicle-specific, direct OEM plug-in connector — it's designed as the fallback option when a vehicle-specific Curt custom wiring harness isn't available for your vehicle. A powered taillight converter wiring kit, such as Curt's #55151, is also required for installation and is sold separately.
Rated for 6.0 amps on the tail light circuit and 3.0 amps on the turn and brake circuits, this converter is direct battery powered and includes overvoltage, electrostatic discharge (ESD), and short-circuit protection. Color-coded wires and a wiring guide are included, along with snap locks for a secure connection. Typical installation time is about 1.5 hours.
