US Motors3/4 HP PSCPart 5470 / 20590US Motors 5470 Direct Drive Blower Motor -- 3/4 HP, 115V, 1075 RPM, 4-Speed

The US Motors 5470 (also cataloged as NBK part 20590) is a permanent split capacitor (PSC) direct drive fan and blower motor built for continuous-duty HVAC service. With four speed taps, reversible rotation, and a rugged ring/stud mounting design, this motor is a go-to replacement for air handlers, furnace blowers, and fan coil units in both commercial and residential installations.

Continuous-Duty Performance in a Compact Frame

Permanent split capacitor motors like the 5470 are the industry standard for direct drive blower applications because they deliver smooth starts, quiet operation, and reliable long-term efficiency. The 5470 runs on standard 115V/60Hz single-phase power and draws 9.8 amps at full load -- well within the capacity of a dedicated 15A circuit.

Four speed taps give HVAC technicians the flexibility to match airflow to duct static pressure requirements without additional controls. Rotation is field-reversible, making it adaptable to a wide variety of blower wheel orientations without ordering a separate CW or CCW variant.

4-Speed Operation

Four lead taps allow fine-tuned airflow matching to system static pressure requirements -- no external speed controller needed.

Reversible Rotation

CW or CCW operation selectable in the field, accommodating a wide range of blower wheel and air handler orientations.

Ball Bearing Construction

Precision ball bearings on both ends support the shaft in any mounting orientation and provide long service life under continuous-duty loads.

Thermal Protection

Automatic thermal overload protection shuts the motor down if it overheats and automatically resets once it cools -- protecting the winding investment.

Mounting and Installation

The 5470 uses a resilient ring/stud mount -- the most common configuration for residential and light-commercial direct drive air handlers. The motor body sits inside a pair of resilient rubber rings that reduce vibration transmission into the cabinet, and studs on each ring plate secure the assembly to the blower housing rails.

  • Ring-to-ring center distance: 6-5/8 inches
  • Resilient ring diameter: 2-1/2 inches
  • Bolt circle diameter: 5-1/8 inches
  • Mounting stud length: 5/8 inch, stud size: 5/8 inch
  • Shaft is 1/2 inch diameter x 5 inches long with a flat for set-screw retention
  • Motor may be mounted in any position (horizontal, vertical, or angled)
Drop-In Replacement Confidence: The 5470 frame dimensions and mounting geometry match a wide range of OEM blower motors in residential furnaces, air handlers, and fan coil units. Cross-reference your existing motor's shaft length, body diameter, bolt circle, and speed taps before ordering to confirm fitment.

Wiring and Lead Configuration

The motor ships with a 36-inch lead set, giving installers enough slack to route wiring cleanly through the blower cabinet without splicing. Each speed tap is color-coded per industry convention. The PSC design requires a run capacitor -- capacitor is not included and must be matched to the motor's microfarad rating at installation.

Capacitor Required -- Not Included: PSC motors require an external run capacitor to operate. Use a capacitor rated to the motor manufacturer's specification. Installing an incorrect capacitor value will reduce efficiency, increase winding temperature, and shorten motor life.

Class B Insulation and Continuous Air-Over Duty

Class B insulation (rated to 130 deg C rise) provides a meaningful margin above the typical operating temperatures seen in residential HVAC applications. The motor is rated for continuous air-over (CAO) duty, meaning it is designed to run indefinitely while air flows over the motor body for cooling -- the normal condition inside a blower housing.

Air-Over Duty Rating: CAO motors rely on the airstream from the blower wheel for cooling. Do not run this motor outside of a properly assembled blower housing for extended periods, as the reduced airflow will cause the thermal protector to trip.
Maintenance Tip: Ball bearing motors like the 5470 are sealed and do not require field lubrication. Keep the blower cabinet filter clean -- restricted airflow raises motor operating temperature and accelerates bearing wear. Inspect the blower wheel for dust buildup annually; an imbalanced wheel increases vibration loads on the bearings.

Important Information
  • A run capacitor is required for PSC motor operation -- it is NOT included with this motor. Match the capacitor microfarad rating to the motor specification before energizing.
  • This is an air-over duty motor. It must be installed inside a properly assembled blower housing. Extended operation outside a housing will cause overheating and thermal protector trips.
  • Verify shaft length (5 inches), body diameter (5-5/8 inches), bolt circle (5-1/8 inches), and speed tap count (4) against your existing motor before installation.
  • Automatic thermal protection will reset once the motor cools -- if the protector trips repeatedly, identify and correct the root cause (restricted airflow, incorrect capacitor, low voltage) rather than continuing to reset.
  • Rotation is reversible in the field by swapping leads per the wiring diagram. Confirm blower wheel rotation direction before finalizing wiring.
  • For RV and coach HVAC applications, confirm that your system operates on 115V/60Hz shore power or a generator output -- this motor is not compatible with 12V DC or 24V DC systems.
