B&W Hitches 16,000 lb Capacity 4" Drop B&W BMHD30012 Heavy-Duty Ball Mount -- 16K GTW, 4-Inch Drop

When you're pulling a heavy fifth-wheel-compatible gooseneck trailer, a large travel trailer, or any serious load, your ball mount has to be built to the same standard as the rest of your tow setup. The B&W Hitches BMHD30012 is a forged steel ball mount rated at 16,000 lb gross trailer weight, designed to drop 4 inches from the receiver opening to bring your ball height into level alignment with taller trailer couplers. If you run a 2.5-inch receiver hitch on a heavy-duty pickup, this is the mount built for that application.

Built for Heavy Loads -- Without the Guesswork

B&W Hitches has built a reputation among serious towers and RV haulers for making towing hardware that matches the actual ratings of today's heavy-duty trucks. The BMHD30012 is part of B&W's heavy-duty ball mount lineup, targeting the 2.5-inch receiver market where half-ton mounts simply won't do. This is the mount for 3/4-ton and 1-ton trucks -- think Ram 2500/3500, Ford F-250/F-350, and GM Silverado/Sierra HD rigs -- that are towing loaded travel trailers, horse trailers, car haulers, and large utility trailers regularly near or at their rated capacity.

The 4-inch drop accommodates a wide range of trailer coupler heights. If your truck's receiver sits high relative to your trailer tongue, a 4-inch drop typically brings the ball down to the level-tow sweet spot for most standard travel trailers and conventional trailers. Towing level reduces trailer sway, keeps brake proportioning accurate, and takes stress off the hitch receiver itself.

16,000 lb GTW Rating

Handles the heaviest loads permitted on 2.5-inch receiver hitches. Rated for gross trailer weight, not just tongue weight -- serious capacity for serious towing.

4-Inch Drop

Drops the ball platform 4 inches below the receiver centerline to achieve level towing from high-mounted receivers on HD pickup trucks.

Forged Steel Construction

B&W's heavy-duty ball mounts are forged -- not cast, not welded plate -- for superior grain structure, impact resistance, and long service life under cyclic tow loads.

2.5-Inch Receiver Fit

Shank sized for 2.5-inch square receiver tubes found on heavy-duty Class IV and Class V hitches on 3/4-ton and 1-ton trucks.

Who This Mount Is For

This is not a universal commuter-truck accessory. The BMHD30012 is purpose-built for heavy-duty tow vehicles equipped with 2.5-inch receiver hitches -- the kind of receiver that comes standard on Ram 2500/3500, Ford F-250/F-350 Super Duty, and GM 2500HD/3500HD trucks from the factory or with an aftermarket Class V hitch upgrade.

  • Full-time RVers towing large travel trailers near rated vehicle capacity
  • Equestrian trailer owners with loaded horse trailers at or above 10,000 lb
  • Car hauler and enclosed trailer operators in commercial or semi-commercial use
  • Contractors towing heavy equipment trailers, dump trailers, or flatbeds
  • Anyone who has upgraded to a 2.5-inch receiver and needs a matching ball mount
Why Forged Matters for Heavy Towing

Cast steel and welded plate mounts can have internal voids or heat-affected zones that weaken under repeated stress. B&W's forged construction aligns the metal grain with the load path, giving the mount greater strength per pound and better resistance to fatigue cracking over tens of thousands of towing miles.

Getting the Drop Right

The correct drop (or rise) for your ball mount depends on your receiver height above ground and your trailer's coupler height. To tow level:

  • Measure your receiver opening center from the ground (truck unloaded, on level pavement)
  • Measure your trailer coupler height from the ground (trailer unloaded, on level pavement)
  • The difference is your required drop or rise
  • A 4-inch drop is typical for HD pickups with receivers sitting approximately 18-22 inches high towing trailers with 14-18 inch coupler heights

If your numbers call for a different drop, B&W offers the BMHD series in multiple drop configurations. Confirm your measurement before ordering -- returning a ball mount because the drop was off is a common and avoidable mistake.

Ball Not Included

The BMHD30012 is a ball mount shank and platform -- the tow ball itself is sold separately. At 16,000 lb GTW, you will typically need a 2-5/16-inch ball rated to at least 16,000 lb, torqued to the ball manufacturer's specification. Do not reuse a worn or undersized ball on a mount rated at this capacity.

Installation and Receiver Fit

Installation is straightforward: slide the shank into your 2.5-inch receiver, align the pin holes, insert your hitch pin or a 5/8-inch receiver lock pin (sold separately), and secure with a clip or lock. The mount is ready to use once the pin is in place. No tools beyond a pin and clip are required for normal installation and removal.

For security-minded towers, a standard 5/8-inch receiver lock (keyed or combination) fits the pin hole and prevents unauthorized removal of the mount and any attached trailer in parking situations.

Match All Components to the Rated Capacity

A 16,000 lb ball mount is only as strong as the weakest link in your tow chain. Verify that your truck's receiver hitch, the hitch-to-frame attachment, your tow ball, and your trailer coupler are all rated to at least 16,000 lb GTW before loading to this mount's full capacity. Mixing a 16K mount with a 12K receiver hitch does not give you 16K -- the lower-rated component governs your safe limit.

Maintenance Tips for Long Service Life
  • Inspect the shank and platform for cracks, deformation, or corrosion before each towing season
  • Keep the receiver tube interior clean and lightly greased to prevent the shank from seizing in wet climates
  • Re-torque the ball nut periodically -- heavy towing vibration can back off a ball nut over time
  • If the mount has been in a collision or severe jerk load event, retire and replace it -- internal stress damage may not be visible externally

Important Information -- Read Before Towing
  • Maximum rated capacity is 16,000 lb GTW. Never exceed the lowest capacity rating of any component in your tow system (receiver hitch, ball mount, tow ball, coupler, and safety chains).
  • This mount is designed for 2.5-inch square receiver tubes only. It will not fit 1.25-inch or 2-inch receivers and should not be forced into an undersized opening.
  • A tow ball is NOT included. Select a 2-5/16-inch ball rated to at least 16,000 lb GTW and torque the ball nut to the ball manufacturer's specification before towing.
  • A hitch pin is NOT included. Use a 5/8-inch hitch pin with a locking clip or a keyed receiver lock to secure the mount in the receiver before towing.
  • If this mount has been subjected to a collision, jackknife event, or severe overload, retire it immediately. Structural fatigue damage may not be visible on the exterior surface.
  • Confirm your required drop before purchase. Measure receiver centerline height and coupler height on level ground with the vehicle and trailer in their normal loaded stance. Returning the wrong drop is avoidable with a 60-second measurement.
  • Verify your vehicle's receiver hitch and frame attachment are rated to support 16,000 lb GTW before relying on this mount's full capacity.
