The Camco 09951 is a 1-1/2" 6-point socket designed for removing and installing screw-in electric water heater elements in residential water heaters. Standard screwdrivers and pliers won't provide the torque needed to break loose a corroded or overtightened element — this socket applies even force across all six flats of the hex bushing to minimize the risk of stripping and maximize removal torque.
It accepts a standard 1/2" drive ratchet or breaker bar — no proprietary tools needed. The chrome-plated steel construction handles the high torque required for stubborn elements. Note per Camco's own product documentation: this socket is designed for residential screw-in elements and is not for use on RV electric water heaters. It also will not fit a water heater drain valve.
1. Turn off power to the water heater at the breaker and shut off the cold water supply 2. Drain the tank sufficiently to expose the element 3. Attach the 09951 socket to a 1/2" drive ratchet or breaker bar 4. Seat the socket over the element hex bushing and turn counterclockwise to remove 5. Install the replacement element and torque clockwise to approximately 20 ft-lbs — do not overtighten Tip: A breaker bar rather than a ratchet provides better leverage on corroded elements.

Per Camco's own product documentation, the 09951 is designed for residential screw-in electric water heater elements only. It is not for use on RV electric water heaters and will not fit a water heater drain valve. RV water heaters typically use Atwood or Suburban heating elements with different configurations — consult your RV water heater's service documentation for the correct removal tool.
