What Is an Idler Hub and When Do You Replace It?

An idler hub is the rotating wheel-mounting assembly on a trailer axle that does not have a brake actuator. It houses the inner and outer wheel bearings, retains the bearing grease via a grease seal on the inboard side, and provides the wheel stud pattern for mounting the wheel. Idler hubs are used on the non-brake end of a brake axle or on a fully idler (no-brake) axle in a tandem setup.

Installation Overview

Replacing an idler hub is a straightforward task for anyone comfortable with basic trailer maintenance. General steps:

  • Jack and support the trailer frame securely -- never work under a trailer supported only by a jack
  • Remove the wheel and tire assembly
  • Pull the dust cap, remove the cotter pin and castle nut, and slide the old hub off the spindle
  • Press out old bearing cups from the old hub (do not reuse)
