Coleman Mach 15,000 BTU Heat Pump
Coleman Mach 15 HP2 -- Model 38004-066 -- Rooftop RV Air Conditioner with Reverse-Cycle Heat Pump

The Mach 15 HP2 is Coleman's premium 15,000 BTU rooftop unit built for RV owners who need serious cooling power and a real heating alternative. A factory-installed reversing valve converts the refrigeration circuit into a heat pump, delivering up to 2.5 times the warmth of a comparable electric heat strip -- without burning propane. One rooftop unit handles both seasons.

Full-Season Climate Control for Your RV

Most RV air conditioners do one job. The Coleman Mach 15 HP2 does two. During summer, it pushes 15,000 BTU of nominal cooling capacity through your rig. When temperatures drop, the heat pump mode reverses refrigerant flow to extract heat from outside air and move it inside -- efficiently, without the amperage spike of resistance heat strips.

That 2.5x heating advantage over electric strips is a real-world number. On a 50-amp shore power hookup or a generator, the HP2 lets you maintain comfortable temps in shoulder-season weather without leaning on propane. It is not a replacement for a furnace in hard-freeze conditions, but for spring, fall, and mild winter camping it is a genuine game-changer.

15,000 BTU Cooling

Nominal cooling capacity rated for large RV floor plans -- trailers, fifth wheels, and Class A motorhomes up to approximately 400 sq ft.

Reverse-Cycle Heat Pump

Factory reversing valve converts refrigerant circuit to heating mode. Up to 2.5x more heat output than an equivalent electric heat strip at similar amperage draw.

Textured White Shroud

UV-resistant textured white ABS shroud blends with standard RV rooflines. Low-profile Mach 15 design reduces drag at highway speeds.

Standard 14x14 Ceiling Duct Footprint

Mounts over a standard 14 x 14 inch roof opening. Compatible with Coleman Mach air distribution boxes and most OEM RV ceiling assemblies.

How the HP2 Heat Pump Works

In cooling mode, the HP2 operates like any vapor-compression air conditioner -- the compressor pressurizes refrigerant, the condenser coil rejects heat outside, and the evaporator coil absorbs heat from inside cabin air. In heat pump mode, the reversing valve flips refrigerant direction: the outdoor coil becomes the evaporator (absorbing ambient heat), and the indoor coil becomes the condenser (releasing that heat into the cabin).

Heat pump efficiency is expressed as a Coefficient of Performance (COP). At moderate outside temperatures (roughly 40-60 deg F), a heat pump moves significantly more BTU per watt than an electric resistance strip. Below approximately 32-35 deg F, outdoor heat becomes harder to extract and efficiency drops. Most users pair the HP2 with an auxiliary furnace for sub-freezing nights.

Heating Efficiency Advantage

The HP2 heat pump delivers approximately 2.5x the heat output of a standard 3,500-watt electric heat strip drawing the same shore power. For shoulder-season camping -- spring rallies, fall color runs, mild winter trips in the South or Southwest -- this means staying warm without firing the propane furnace and without a separate electric space heater.

Compatibility and Fitment

The Mach 15 HP2 is designed for RVs with a standard 14 x 14 inch roof cutout. It is compatible with Coleman Mach ceiling assemblies and air distribution boxes, including the popular non-ducted and ducted configurations. If your RV currently has a Coleman Mach 15 unit, the HP2 is a direct rooftop swap -- the wiring harness and gasket footprint are the same.

  • Fits standard 14 x 14 in. RV roof openings (industry standard cutout)
  • Compatible with Coleman Mach ducted and non-ducted ceiling assemblies
  • Works with Coleman Mach digital and analog wall thermostats
  • Replaces most Coleman Mach 15 series rooftop units as a direct upgrade
  • Requires a shore power connection of at least 30A (15,000 BTU units typically draw 12-16A running; startup amperage is higher -- see electrical specs)

Thermostat Compatibility Note

The HP2 requires a thermostat with heat pump mode support to access both heating and cooling functions. Coleman Mach's digital wall thermostats (e.g., 9430, 9330 series) include heat pump logic. A basic cooling-only thermostat will operate the compressor in cooling mode but will not engage the reversing valve for heating. Verify thermostat compatibility before installation.

Installation Overview

The Mach 15 HP2 installs as a rooftop unit paired with a separate ceiling assembly (air handler / distribution box) mounted inside the RV. The rooftop unit and ceiling assembly are connected by a wiring harness through the roof opening. Both components must be ordered -- the ceiling assembly is not included with the rooftop unit unless explicitly specified.

  • Rooftop unit mounts over the 14 x 14 in. roof cutout with a foam gasket seal
  • Four bolts secure the unit through the ceiling assembly below
  • Single electrical connection runs through the roof opening to the ceiling assembly
  • Ceiling assembly and control harness are sold separately
  • Nominal installation time for an experienced RV tech: 1-2 hours

Ceiling Assembly Not Included

This listing covers the Coleman Mach 15 HP2 rooftop unit only. The matching ceiling assembly (air distribution box / air handler) is a required companion part and is sold separately. Do not attempt to operate the rooftop unit without a properly matched ceiling assembly -- it will not function correctly and may void the warranty.

Maintenance Tips

  • Clean or replace the ceiling assembly air filter every 30 days during heavy use -- a clogged filter sharply reduces cooling capacity and can cause the compressor to overheat.
  • Inspect the foam mounting gasket each season for compression and cracking. A failed gasket allows roof leaks and reduces vibration isolation.
  • Keep the condenser coil fins clean -- rinse with low-pressure water from above seasonally.
  • In heat pump mode, some condensate may form on the outdoor coil at low temperatures. This is normal. The unit should not be run in heat pump mode when ambient temps are below approximately 32 deg F for sustained periods.

Important Information

  • This is a rooftop unit only. A compatible Coleman Mach ceiling assembly is required and must be purchased separately -- the unit will not function without it.
  • A thermostat with heat pump mode logic is required to use heating function. Standard cooling-only thermostats will not engage the reversing valve.
  • Startup (locked rotor) amperage can exceed 60A. If operating on a generator, a soft-start capacitor module is strongly recommended to prevent nuisance tripping and compressor damage.
  • Do not run the unit in heat pump heating mode when sustained outdoor temperatures are below 32 deg F -- efficiency drops sharply and coil icing can occur.
  • Roof must support the weight of the unit (approximately 87-95 lbs) plus hardware. Inspect the roof structure and existing cutout reinforcement before installation.
  • Seal all roof penetrations with appropriate RV lap sealant after installation. The included foam gasket provides a compression seal but is not a substitute for proper rooftop sealing.
  • This product is intended for RV and recreational vehicle rooftop installation only. It is not designed for residential or commercial HVAC applications.
