A worn or cracked leaf spring doesn't just make your ride rough -- it puts your axle alignment and tire wear at risk on every trip. The Lippert 176326 is a direct-replacement 5-leaf slipper spring built for 5,000 lb trailer axles. At 30 inches from the front eyelet to the slipper end, it matches the OEM geometry on a wide range of travel trailers and fifth wheels equipped with Lippert and Dexter-style axle hangers. Heavy-duty black steel construction and a 4 lb assembly weight make this a straightforward weekend replacement job.

Purpose-Built Replacement for 5,000 Lb RV Axles

Leaf springs are the workhorses of your trailer's suspension. Every pothole, railroad crossing, and gravel road transfers force through these leaves -- and over time that repeated flex causes fatigue, cracks, or complete failure. The Lippert 176326 restores OEM-equivalent spring rate and ride quality without custom fabrication or modifications to your existing axle hanger hardware.

The slipper design -- where the rear of the spring slides freely in a slotted bracket rather than pinning at both ends -- allows the spring pack to lengthen under load. This is the standard configuration on most single- and tandem-axle RV trailers in the 5,000 lb per-axle range. If your current spring has a fixed rear eye, this part is not a drop-in match; check your existing hardware before ordering.

5-Leaf Pack

Five progressive steel leaves deliver a firm but compliant spring rate calibrated for 5,000 lb axle loads. More leaves than lighter-duty 3- or 4-leaf springs for improved load distribution.

30" Eye-to-Slipper

Measured from the center of the front mounting eyelet to the slipper tab end. Matches the hanger spacing on most Lippert and compatible trailer frames in this weight class.

2.5" Leaf Width

Standard 2.5-inch width aligns with the most common slipper brackets and U-bolt saddle assemblies used on 5,000 lb RV axles. No bracket modifications required on matching setups.

Heavy-Duty Steel

Hot-formed steel leaves with a black finish. At 4 lbs for the complete assembly, it handles road load without adding unnecessary unsprung weight to your axle.

Slipper vs. Double-Eye Springs -- Which Do You Have?

Before ordering, confirm your rear spring mount style:

  • Slipper end (this part): The rear of the spring rests in an open-top slide bracket. The spring can slide fore and aft as it flexes. No bolt or pin at the rear.
  • Double-eye: Both ends of the spring have rolled eyelets that accept a bolt or pin. If your trailer uses this style, you need a different part number.

Look under your trailer at the rear spring mount. If you see the spring end sitting in a curved or flat slide channel rather than through a bolt, you have a slipper mount and this spring is the correct style.

Correct Spring Rate Matters: Installing a spring with the wrong weight rating -- even if it physically fits -- will affect ride height, axle centering, and tire wear. Confirm your axle's rated capacity matches this spring's 5,000 lb rating before installation.

Installation Overview

Lippert estimates approximately 2 hours for a typical installation with basic hand tools. General process on a tandem-axle trailer:

  • Safely support the trailer frame with jack stands -- never rely on a scissor jack alone for suspension work.
  • Remove the wheel and tire on the affected corner for access.
  • Loosen and remove the U-bolt nuts and saddle plate to free the axle from the spring pack.
  • Remove the front eyelet bolt and slide the old spring out of the rear slipper bracket.
  • Slide the new spring into the slipper bracket and reinstall the front eyelet bolt.
  • Reseat the axle on the spring center pin and reinstall the U-bolt and saddle hardware.
  • Torque all fasteners to spec and check axle alignment before loading the trailer.
Alignment Check Required: Any time a leaf spring is replaced, have your trailer's axle alignment verified. A spring that deflects differently than the opposite side can cause tire scrub, uneven wear, and handling problems, especially on tandem setups.
U-Bolts and Center Pin: U-bolts, center pins, and slipper bracket hardware are not included with this spring. Inspect your existing hardware at the time of replacement and replace any stretched U-bolts or worn center pins as part of the same job.
Maintenance Tip: After installation, re-torque the U-bolt nuts after the first 50-100 miles of use. New spring packs settle under load and fasteners can back off slightly during the break-in period.

Important Information
  • This spring is rated for 5,000 lb axles only. Do not use on axles with a different weight rating, even if the spring physically fits the mounting points.
  • This is a slipper-end spring. It is not compatible with double-eye spring hangers where both ends require a bolt-through eyelet.
  • U-bolts, center pins, slipper brackets, and eyelet hardware are NOT included. Inspect and replace worn fasteners at time of installation.
  • Always support the trailer frame securely on jack stands before removing suspension components. Never work under a trailer supported only by a hydraulic or scissor jack.
  • Re-torque U-bolt fasteners after the first 50-100 miles of use following installation.
  • After spring replacement, verify axle alignment to prevent premature or uneven tire wear.
  • Installing the wrong spring rate or length will affect ride height and axle tracking. Confirm fitment before installation.
