Camco Solid Brass Check Valve Included Camco 59953 -- 1/4" Male NPT x 1/4" Female Inverted Flare Propane Fitting

Bridge the gap between a 1/4" inverted flare propane pigtail and a regulator with a 1/4" female NPT inlet port. This compact solid brass fitting from Camco includes a built-in check valve that restricts propane flow to one direction, adding a layer of safety to your RV or trailer propane system. Weighing just 0.05 lbs, it installs quickly and holds up to repeated use in tight LP plumbing runs.

The Right Adapter for Mismatched Propane Connections

Many RV propane systems mix pigtail hoses terminated with inverted flare fittings and regulators or manifolds ported with NPT threads. Without the correct adapter, those two standards simply will not connect -- and improvised workarounds risk leaks. The Camco 59953 is machined specifically to mate a 1/4" inverted flare female end (the pigtail side) to a 1/4" male NPT thread (the regulator or manifold side), giving you a clean, code-compliant joint.

The fitting is machined from solid brass, which resists corrosion from LP gas odorants and outdoor moisture, and provides the structural integrity needed to withstand standard propane system pressures. The integrated check valve is a key safety feature: it permits flow only from the pigtail toward the regulator, helping prevent reverse flow if a line is disconnected under pressure.

Solid Brass Construction

Corrosion-resistant brass body stands up to LP gas odorants and outdoor exposure over years of use.

Built-In Check Valve

One-directional flow control is built into the fitting body -- no separate check valve needed in the line.

Dual Thread Standards

1/4" male NPT on one end, 1/4" female inverted flare on the other -- bridges the two most common LP connection types.

Compact and Lightweight

Weighs just 0.05 lbs. Fits into tight propane compartments without adding bulk or requiring repositioning of other components.

Where This Fitting Is Typically Used

The 59953 is intended for use in propane systems where a regulator or manifold has a 1/4" female NPT port and the incoming pigtail hose is terminated with a 1/4" inverted flare (also written as 1/4" IFF or 1/4" SAE 45-deg flare on some fittings). Common applications include:

  • Connecting a two-stage RV regulator to a braided pigtail hose at the tank end
  • Adapting LP manifold inlets that use NPT ports to accept inverted flare pigtails
  • Replacing a corroded or stripped OEM fitting in an existing propane run
  • Building a custom propane plumbing run in a camper, trailer, or converted van
Check Valve Benefit: The integrated check valve adds a safety margin during pigtail swaps or cylinder changeovers. If propane pressure is present on the regulator side when a pigtail is disconnected, the check valve prevents gas from flowing back out through the open fitting end.

Thread Identification Guide

Getting thread type right before purchasing saves time and return shipping. Here is how to identify each end:

  • 1/4" Male NPT (pipe thread): Tapered thread that tightens with a wrench. Found on regulator bodies, manifold inlets, and many T-fittings in LP systems. Requires thread sealant (pipe dope rated for LP gas or PTFE tape).
  • 1/4" Female Inverted Flare: Straight internal thread with a 45-deg internal seat that grips the flared end of the pigtail. No thread sealant is used -- the metal-to-metal flare seat creates the seal. Common on braided propane pigtail hoses.
Thread Sealant Note: Apply LP-rated PTFE tape or liquid pipe dope only to the 1/4" male NPT end of this fitting before threading it into the regulator or manifold. Do NOT apply sealant to the inverted flare end -- the flare seat provides the seal on that side.

Installation Tips

  • Hand-tighten the NPT end first, then snug with a wrench -- typically 2 to 3 turns past hand-tight for 1/4" NPT brass into a brass body.
  • Connect the pigtail's inverted flare nut to the female flare end of the fitting finger-tight, then tighten with a wrench -- do not over-torque, as over-tightening can damage the flare seat.
  • After installation, perform a leak check using an approved LP leak detector solution. Do not use an open flame to check for leaks.
  • Inspect the fitting annually for signs of corrosion, cracking, or odorant staining that may indicate a slow seep.
Maintenance Tip: If the fitting has been in service for several years or shows discoloration from LP odorant, replace it proactively. Brass fittings are inexpensive insurance against a propane leak in an enclosed storage compartment.

Important Information -- Read Before Installing
  • This fitting is designed for LP (propane) gas systems only. Do not use with natural gas, compressed air, or any other gas or fluid application.
  • Always shut off the propane supply at the cylinder valve before installing or removing this fitting.
  • Use LP-rated PTFE tape or approved pipe dope on the NPT threads only -- never on the inverted flare end.
  • After installation, test all joints with an approved leak detection solution before relighting any appliances or ignition sources.
  • Do not use an open flame to test for propane leaks.
  • Thread sealant, pigtail hose, and regulator are NOT included -- sold as a single fitting only.
  • Inspect annually; replace if any corrosion, cracking, or odorant staining is present.
  • Installation should comply with NFPA 58, applicable state codes, and the requirements of your RV or vehicle manufacturer.
