Valterra 6-Gallon Fit Permanent Mount Valterra P23503LFVP Permanent Mount Water Heater Bypass Kit -- 6-Gallon

Stop filling your water heater tank with antifreeze every fall. This permanent-mount bypass kit installs once and stays in place year-round, giving you simple two-valve control to route antifreeze around your 6-gallon water heater during winterizing -- and restore full water flow when the camping season starts again.

Cut Antifreeze Use and Simplify Winterizing

Without a bypass kit, your RV water heater tank fills with antifreeze before it reaches the rest of the plumbing -- wasting 6 gallons of RV antifreeze every single winterization. The Valterra P23503LFVP eliminates that waste entirely. Once installed, two quarter-turn valves redirect flow around the heater tank so only the lines and fixtures need to be protected.

Because this is a permanent-mount design, there are no fittings to remove and reinstall season after season. The valves stay plumbed in line with your existing hot and cold water connections at the heater, giving you a clean, code-friendly installation that holds up to repeated use.

Two-Valve Operation

One bypass valve and one check valve work together to isolate the tank or restore normal flow -- no guesswork, no disassembly required.

Permanent Installation

Mount it once behind the water heater access panel. Valves remain in place all year and swap positions for each season change.

Fits 6-Gallon Heaters

Sized and plumbed specifically for 6-gallon RV water heater tanks -- the most common size in Class A, Class C, and fifth-wheel rigs.

Saves Antifreeze Every Winter

Bypassing the 6-gallon tank means 6 fewer gallons of antifreeze needed each season -- a straightforward, measurable benefit every time you winterize.

How the Bypass Works

The kit tees into the cold water inlet and hot water outlet connections at your water heater. In normal (summer) mode, valves direct cold water into the tank and hot water out to your fixtures just like the factory setup. In bypass (winter) mode, you close the supply and return valves to the tank and open the crossover valve -- antifreeze flows directly from cold to hot lines without entering the heater tank at all.

Switching between modes takes under a minute and requires no tools once the kit is installed. This makes spring de-winterizing equally fast: open the tank valves, close the bypass, flush the lines, and you are back to hot water.

Winterizing Benefit: A standard 6-gallon water heater holds approximately 6 gallons. Without a bypass, every gallon of that capacity must be filled with antifreeze before the downstream plumbing is protected. This kit eliminates that step entirely, reducing antifreeze consumption and saving time at both ends of the season.

Compatible Water Heaters

This kit is designed for 6-gallon tank water heaters commonly found in RVs, including units made by Atwood (Dinosaur/Attwood), Suburban, and similar brands with standard 1/2-inch NPT inlet and outlet connections. It is not intended for 10-gallon or on-demand (tankless) water heaters -- see the Valterra P23504LFVP for 10-gallon applications.

  • Compatible with Suburban SW6D, SW6DE, SW6DEL and similar 6-gallon models
  • Compatible with Atwood G6A-8E, G6A-7E, G6A-6E and similar 6-gallon models
  • Requires standard 1/2-inch NPT threaded connections at the heater
  • Not for use with 10-gallon tanks or tankless water heaters
Part Number Note: The Valterra vendor part number for this kit is P23503LFVP (6-gallon). The 10-gallon version is P23504LFVP. If your current documentation references P23504LFVP in connection with a 6-gallon heater, verify your tank size before ordering.

Installation Overview

Installation is a DIY-friendly job for anyone comfortable with basic plumbing. Access the water heater from the exterior compartment panel, shut off the water supply, and connect the bypass kit between the existing cold inlet and hot outlet ports using the included hardware. The permanent valves are then accessible for seasonal switching without reopening the wall or removing panels.

Installation Tips:
  • Use PTFE (Teflon) tape on all threaded connections to prevent slow seeps.
  • Test for leaks at normal system pressure before closing the access panel.
  • Label the valve positions (OPEN / BYPASS) with a marker or tag for future reference.
  • Drain and blow out the water heater tank separately before winterizing -- bypassing does not drain the tank.
Heads Up -- Tank Must Still Be Drained: The bypass kit prevents antifreeze from entering the tank, but it does not drain the tank for you. Before winterizing, open the water heater drain plug and allow the tank to empty completely. Failure to drain leaves standing water in the tank, which can freeze and crack the unit.

Important Information
  • This kit fits 6-gallon RV water heaters only. For 10-gallon tanks, order the Valterra P23504LFVP instead.
  • The bypass kit isolates the tank from antifreeze flow -- it does not drain the tank. Always open the drain plug and empty the tank completely before winterizing.
  • Use PTFE thread tape on all NPT connections. Failure to seal threads properly may result in leaks at operating pressure.
  • Test all connections at full system pressure before closing the access panel or assuming the installation is complete.
  • Not suitable for tankless (on-demand) water heaters -- no tank to bypass.
  • Always follow your water heater manufacturer's winterization instructions in addition to using this bypass kit.
