The call always comes in the same way. Somebody's refrigerator has stopped cooling, or their furnace clicks and then does nothing, and they've already replaced the thermocouple, checked the propane, cleaned the burner tube, and cycled the power. They're convinced the whole appliance is dead and they're bracing themselves for a two thousand dollar replacement.
Nine times out of ten it isn't the appliance. It's the board.
Circuit boards are the least understood part of an RV. They sit behind an access panel, they cost a fraction of the appliance they control, and when they fail, they take the whole unit down in a way that looks catastrophic. I've watched people scrap perfectly good refrigerators because one small component gave up.
What makes them intimidating is that they don't announce themselves. A failed board doesn't leak, doesn't smell, doesn't make a noise. It just stops doing its job, and every symptom points somewhere else. So people chase the symptom instead of the cause and spend a fortnight getting nowhere.
The good news is that board replacement is one of the most satisfying repairs you can do. No gas, no water, no structural work. A handful of screws, a wire harness or two, and twenty minutes. The hard part isn't the fitting. It's identifying the right board.
Best for: DMR702, RM1350, RM3762 and RM3962 owners who want the factory part back in
This is the OEM power module, and the Dometic 3851331011 fits its application list precisely: DMR702, RM1350, RM3762 and RM3962. It runs at 120 volts AC, 5 amps, 60 hertz, and carries a ninety-day manufacturer warranty.
There's a school of thought that says always go aftermarket on boards, because the aftermarket ones are built tougher. There's truth in that, and I'll come to it. But there's a case for OEM too. On the larger Dometic units, the power module talks to a lot of other things, and if the fridge is otherwise healthy and you simply want it back to the condition it left the factory in, the original part does that with no surprises.
The ninety-day warranty is worth reading honestly. It's shorter than what some aftermarket makers offer, and that tells you something about the confidence each manufacturer has in their own design.
Check your model number before you order. Not the model on the door sticker — the one on the data plate behind the lower vent. People get this wrong constantly and it's the biggest single cause of a board arriving that doesn't fit.

Best for: Norcold 1200 Series refrigerators inside the correct serial range
The Norcold 39-2014 is the factory power supply board for the 1200 Series, supporting two-way AC and LP operation.
Pay very close attention to the serial number on this one. It fits units with serial numbers from 832171 through 8981138. That is not a formality. Norcold changed the board design partway through the production run, and a board from outside that range will physically fit and then behave strangely, or not at all.
The 1200 Series is a good refrigerator that picked up a reputation it didn't entirely deserve, largely on the back of the recall history. The units themselves are solid. The boards, like everybody's boards, don't love voltage spikes.
If you're replacing this board and you don't know why the old one died, that's your cue to look at what's feeding it. A board that fails without an obvious cause is often the second casualty of an electrical problem that's still sitting there, waiting for the new one.

Best for: Norcold owners who want a board that outlasts the one that failed
Here's where the aftermarket argument gets serious.
The Dinosaur Electronics DIN6212XX replaces Norcold power supply boards 621267 through 621271 along with several others. It handles AC, DC and gas operation, includes a three-way no-CO reset, and carries a three-year warranty.
Three years, against ninety days on the OEM equivalent. Dinosaur build these with heavier components and better protection than the boards they replace, and the warranty is a statement of that.
Dinosaur Electronics have a particular reputation among people who work on RVs for a living, and it's earned. They exist because the original boards kept failing in predictable ways, so they redesigned them to not do that. Straight swap, similar money, considerably longer life.
The no-CO reset is a small feature that matters more than it sounds. It means the board can be reset without a service call when the carbon monoxide safety trips — which on some original boards required intervention you couldn't do yourself at a campsite.

Best for: Smaller Norcold units running on AC and gas only
Not every fridge needs a three-way board, and the Norcold 39-1559 is the two-way AC and gas power supply for the units that don't.
This matters more than it sounds. A two-way board is simpler, it has fewer things to go wrong, and it costs meaningfully less than its three-way cousin. If your refrigerator was never designed to run on 12 volt DC operation, you don't need a board that offers it — and paying for capability your appliance can't use is a common and avoidable mistake.
The way to check is the board that came out, not the brochure. If it's a two-way board, replace it with a two-way board.
I mention this because I've watched people order the most expensive board in the range on the assumption that more capability means more reliability. It doesn't. It means more circuitry, and every extra circuit is another thing that can fail.

Best for: Dometic RM-series refrigerators, especially after a surge event
The P-246PLUS Micro replaces the Dometic RM-series boards. Three-way AC, DC and gas operation, and two features worth drawing attention to: a built-in circuit breaker and reverse-polarity protection. It measures 3.10 inches by 8.98 inches.
Reverse-polarity protection is not a luxury. If you've ever plugged into a campground pedestal that was wired wrong — and if you've been RVing long enough, you have — you'll understand why. A miswired pedestal puts voltage where the board doesn't expect it, and on an unprotected board that's the end of the story.
The built-in circuit breaker does the same job for overcurrent. It gives the board a way to protect itself instead of simply dying.
What you're buying here isn't just a replacement. It's a board that's less likely to need replacing again. If your original died and you never worked out why, this is the one I'd fit.
Measure the space before you order. The Micro is compact, which is usually helpful, but on some installations the original mounting holes won't line up, and you want to know that before you're lying on your back in a service bay.

Best for: Atwood 89-AC series furnaces that click and won't light
The Dometic 41-1442 — also carried as 37515 — is the ignition control board for Atwood 89-AC series furnaces. It fits the 89-I AC, 89-II AC, 89-III AC and AC 82, runs at 24 volts AC, and weighs three-tenths of a pound.
Worth clearing up a common confusion. Atwood and Dometic are the same company now. Dometic acquired Atwood, and Atwood-branded service parts are sold under the Dometic name. So if you've been hunting for an Atwood board, finding Dometic part numbers and wondering whether you've got the wrong thing — you haven't. That is the correct part.
The classic Atwood furnace fault is the one where you hear the blower spin up, you hear the click of the ignition attempt, and then nothing happens. It cycles a few times and locks out. Everybody's first instinct is the sail switch or the limit switch, and sometimes it is. But when those check out and the gas is good, it's the ignition board.
Furnace faults have a way of revealing themselves at four in the morning in October. It's not a bad part to keep on the shelf if you travel in the cold.

Worth understanding, because it changes what you buy and what you do afterwards.
The commonest killer is voltage. Not a dramatic lightning strike — a pedestal delivering 102 volts on a hot afternoon when every rig on the loop has the air conditioning running. Low voltage makes components work harder and run hotter, and heat is what ages a board to death. People imagine boards die in a bang. Mostly they die slowly, and then one morning they don't wake up.
The second killer is reverse polarity, and it's the one that does happen in a bang. A miswired pedestal puts line voltage on the neutral, and a board that isn't protected against it has no defence at all.
The third is vibration. Every mile you drive, that board is being shaken. Solder joints crack, and a cracked joint gives you an intermittent fault — works when cold, fails when hot, works again the next morning. Intermittent faults are the ones that drive people to distraction, because everything tests fine on the bench.
And the fourth, which nobody expects, is the generator. Some generators surge on start-up, and if your fridge is running when the genset fires, the board takes the hit.
None of that is exotic. It's just what happens to electronics that live in a box on wheels.
Everything above depends on getting the part number right, so let me be blunt about how to do that.
Read the number off the board itself. Not from the appliance model number, not from a parts diagram, not from what somebody on a forum said fits your rig. Pull the access panel, find the board, read the number printed on it.
Then check the serial number of the appliance. Manufacturers change board designs mid-production — the Norcold 1200 Series being the obvious case — and a board that's correct for one serial range is wrong for the next.
Photograph every connector before you disconnect anything. Two minutes, and it settles any argument later about what went where.
And count the pins. Atwood in particular used four-position, six-position and ten-pin connectors across their range, and a board with the wrong connector is a board going back in the box.
A few patterns worth knowing, because they'll save you a lot of guessing.
Fridge works on shore power, refuses to light on gas. Everybody assumes a gas problem and starts pulling the burner apart. Sometimes it is. But if the propane is definitely reaching the appliance and the burner is clean, the board isn't sending the ignition signal, and no amount of cleaning fixes that.
Fridge cools on gas but not on electric. That's usually the heating element rather than the board, and an element is cheap and easy to test. Check it before you buy anything else.
Fridge lights, runs for a while, then drops out and throws a check light. That's the classic board fault, and it's the one people chase hardest in the wrong direction.
Furnace blower spins, ignition clicks, nothing happens, locks out after a few tries. Sail switch, limit switch, or the board. In that order — but when the switches test good, it's the board.
Everything works perfectly at home and fails on the road. That's vibration, and it means a cracked joint. The board is on its way out even if it's behaving today.
You've got both on this list, and the choice isn't obvious, so here's how I'd think about it.
Go OEM — Dometic or Norcold — when the appliance is relatively new, when the board failed for a reason you've identified and fixed, and when you want the unit back exactly as designed. There's nothing wrong with the original part in that situation, and on the larger units it's the safest bet for compatibility.
Go Dinosaur when the board failed and you don't know why, when the appliance is older, or when you simply don't want to do this job twice. The fuse protection, the reverse-polarity protection and the three year warranty all point at the same thing: these boards are built to survive whatever killed the last one.
The prices sit close enough together that cost isn't really the deciding factor. It's about what you want out of the repair.
One last thing, and it's the one people ignore.
A board that failed on its own is unusual. A board that failed because something upstream let it down is normal. Voltage spikes, low voltage, reverse polarity at the pedestal, a generator that surges on start-up — these are what kill boards, and none of them care that you've just fitted a new one.
If you're replacing a board and you haven't got surge protection between your rig and the pedestal, you're putting a new component into the same environment that destroyed the old one. That isn't a repair. It's a delay.
Boards frighten people because they're electronics, and electronics feel like somebody else's problem. But there's nothing in this job that requires special skill. It's screws, connectors and a part number.
The skill is in the diagnosis, and the diagnosis is mostly patience. Work out which board has failed before you buy one. Read the number off the part rather than guessing it. Check the serial range. Count the pins. Take the photographs.
Do that, and a repair that looked like a two thousand dollar appliance replacement turns into a modest part and twenty minutes in a service bay. I've seen it go the other way often enough to know which one I'd rather be doing.
And once the new board is in, spend a moment working out what killed the old one. Because if you don't, you'll be reading this again in eighteen months.
