While RV manufacturers do include insulation, there’s often room for improvement, and many DIY solutions can make a significant difference in maintaining a stable interior temperature and reducing your heating and cooling costs.

As someone who has spent countless nights in an RV in all sorts of weather, I can tell you that improving RV insulation is a worthwhile DIY project.

Reflectix, foam board, and even heavy curtains can make a big difference in temperature control and energy savings. This is absolutely key; even simple measures can have a noticeable impact.

Why Bother with Extra RV Insulation?

Your RV is essentially a small box on wheels, and it’s exposed to the elements on all six sides. Heat and cold can easily transfer through the walls, roof, floor, and especially the windows.

Better insulation helps to:

  • Maintain Comfortable Temperatures: It keeps the heat out in the summer and the warmth in during the winter.
  • Reduce Energy Consumption: Your air conditioner and furnace won't have to work as hard, saving propane or electricity.
  • Minimize Condensation: Proper insulation, combined with ventilation, can help reduce interior condensation, which can lead to mold and mildew issues.
  • Dampen Noise: An added benefit of some insulation types is a reduction in outside noise.

Key Areas to Target for DIY Insulation Improvements

Let’s look at the common areas where you can make a difference with some DIY effort. You can find materials like Reflectix and foam board at most home improvement stores, and specific RV products at places like RVupgradestore.com.

Windows – The Biggest Culprits

Windows are a major source of heat loss in winter and heat gain in summer.

  • Reflectix: This is probably the most popular DIY solution. Reflectix is a reflective bubble insulation that can be easily cut to fit your window panes. You can hold it in place with Velcro, small suction cups, or by just tucking it into the window frame. It reflects radiant heat, keeping it out in summer and in during winter.
  • Heavy Curtains or Thermal Blinds: Adding a layer of heavy, insulated curtains or thermal blinds can create an air pocket and significantly reduce heat transfer.
  • Plexiglass Inserts: Some RVers create interior storm windows using clear plexiglass cut to fit snugly inside the window frame, creating a dead air space.

Vents and Skylights

Roof vents and skylights are also prime spots for heat exchange.

  • RV Vent Insulators/Cushions: These are readily available, pre-made foam-filled pillows, often with a reflective backing, that fit snugly into standard 14x14-inch RV vents. They are very effective.

Doors

Ensure your door seals are in good condition. Replace worn or cracked weather stripping.

You can add a layer of foam board or Reflectix to the inside of the door, covered with a decorative panel if desired.

A heavy curtain or blanket can be hung over the door in extreme temperatures.

Underbelly and Storage Bays

This is a more involved project but can yield significant benefits, especially for cold-weather camping.

If your RV has an enclosed underbelly (coroplast), you can sometimes add layers of foam board insulation or spray foam (use with caution and proper ventilation) between the frame members and the coroplast. Be mindful of not blocking access to tanks or wiring.

Insulating the walls and doors of exterior storage bays can also help, especially if they are adjacent to heated living spaces.

Slide-Outs

The floors and roofs of slide-outs can be weak points for insulation. Adding skirting around your RV when parked for extended periods can help insulate the underside of slide-outs and the main floor.

Some RVers add foam board insulation under the slide-out floor when it’s extended, or create custom-insulated panels for slide-out windows.

Walls and Ceiling (More Advanced)

Adding insulation to existing walls and ceilings is a major undertaking, usually only done during a renovation. However, if you have access to interior wall cavities or the roof structure, adding foam board or other suitable insulation can be very effective.


Types of Insulation Materials for DIY Projects

  • Reflectix (Reflective Bubble Insulation): Excellent for reflecting radiant heat, lightweight, easy to cut and work with. Best used with an air gap.
  • Foam Board (Polystyrene or Polyisocyanurate): Comes in various thicknesses and R-values. Easy to cut, provides good thermal resistance. Polyisocyanurate (Polyiso) generally has a higher R-value per inch than expanded polystyrene (EPS) or extruded polystyrene (XPS).
  • Spray Foam (Canned): Useful for sealing gaps and cracks. Use the “low expansion” type for windows and doors to avoid warping frames. Be aware it can be messy.
  • Weather Stripping: Essential for sealing air leaks around doors, windows, and vents.
  • Natural Fibers (e.g., Wool, Denim): Some RVers opt for more natural insulation materials, though these may require more careful moisture management.

RV Insulation Considerations

Important Considerations

  • Ventilation is Still Key: While you want to insulate, you also need proper ventilation to manage moisture and maintain good air quality. Don't seal up your RV too tightly without ensuring adequate airflow, especially when using propane appliances.
  • Fire Safety: Use insulation materials that are fire-resistant or have a suitable fire rating, especially near heat sources.
  • Moisture Management: Ensure your insulation choices don't trap moisture, which could lead to mold or rot. Some insulation types are vapor barriers, while others are permeable.
