Your RV’s propane system is central to many comforts on the road – from cooking and refrigeration to heating your water and keeping the furnace running on a chilly night.
A key component of that system, one that often gets overlooked until there’s a problem, is the propane regulator. When it’s working correctly, it goes unnoticed. But when it malfunctions, it can bring many of your RV’s systems to a halt.

Firstly, what does this component do?
The propane in your RV tanks is stored under high pressure. The regulator’s job is to reduce that high pressure to a safe, consistent low pressure that your appliances are designed to use (typically around 11 inches of water column).
If that pressure is too high, too low, or inconsistent, your appliances won’t work correctly, and it can even be dangerous.
Most RVs use a two-stage regulator system. The first stage drops the tank pressure to an intermediate level (around 10-15 PSI), and the second stage drops it further to that usable 11 inches WC.
Some setups, especially those with two tanks, will have an auto-changeover regulator, which automatically switches from an empty tank to a full one – a very convenient feature.
